Stay Warm, Stay Safe: Carbon Monoxide Awareness
As temperatures drop, many of us turn to heaters, fireplaces, and generators—but remember, carbon monoxide (CO) is a silent, deadly threat.
☑️ Install and test CO detectors regularly.
☑️ Never use grills, camp stoves, or generators inside your home, garage, or any enclosed space.
☑️ If your detector alarms, head outside immediately and call 911.

Carbon Monoxide and Home Safety
Stay carbon monoxide (CO) safe indoors as temperatures drop and heaters kick on; now’s the time to shield your home from invisible CO dangers. Awareness and preparation are key.
✅ Install Detectors: Place CO detectors on every floor of your home, especially near sleeping areas. They’re your first line of defense. Test all installed CO detectors to ensure they are operating properly.
✅ Generators or Charcoal Grills: Are meant for outdoor use only; they emit high levels of CO and must not be used indoors. Keep generators and grills upwind and 20 feet away from windows and doors.
✅ Ventilate Your Home: Proper ventilation helps to disperse CO and prevents dangerous levels from building up indoors. Opening windows or running exhaust fans, even in the cool months, can reduce CO buildup in your home.
✅ Know the Symptoms: Early symptoms of CO poisoning can be mistaken for flu-like symptoms. Watch for signs like headaches, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. If you suspect CO exposure, get to fresh air immediately and seek medical help.
✅ Avoid Idling Cars in Garages: Even with the door open, CO can creep into your home — shut the engine off as soon as you park.
✅ Educate Your Household: Make sure everyone knows where CO detectors are located and what to do if one goes off.
