Lula came from a community where food insecurity was the norm. In her mid-20s, she was arrested and spent 7 years in prison, a sentence that spanned the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting cultural shifts. When she was released, she found herself in a very different world. Thankfully, she found our partner Second Chance KC to help her navigate this brand new reality on her journey to a restored life.

I spent 16 months in jail. The first six months, there was no barber, no clippers, no scissors - just time. Time to think, time to wait, and time to grow.

By month four, my hair started getting wild. By month six, it was out of control. But honestly, it became the least of my worries. My case kept getting delayed - again and again. With every delay, the system kept me sitting in a cell.

Eventually, I got tired. Not just of being locked up, but of the endless waiting. Justice wasn't coming fast. So, I took a plea, because I wanted my life back.

I walked out with long hair and a lot on my mind.

Most people would have shaved it off and moved on. But I let it keep growing - for a whole year. I figured if I was gonna carry something from that time, it might as well be something I could give away.

So, I decided to donate it. I sent it to Children with Hair Loss. Maybe now, some unlucky girl out there's got a mop of hair from a guy who spent time locked up.

It's weird, but it felt like the only decent thing I could do with all that time and all that hair.
