📘 After more than 30 years, the KCKES Annual Report is back!

Our 2025 Annual Report is being published a little later than we planned, but we’re proud to bring this important tradition back and share the work happening every day at KCKES and in our community.

And we’re just getting started. Look for our 2026 Annual Report much earlier in 2027!

Today, Public Works, including KCKES, Streets, Engineering, Solid Waste, Safety, and Project Management, joined with our partners from Human Resources and 311 for Municipal Hospitality Training workshop led by Christopher Gilbert of Municipal Hospitality Advisors.

One of the biggest takeaways was simple: Hospitality is not customer service. It’s culture. Customer service is about responding to a need. Hospitality is about intentionally creating an experience that builds trust, respect, and confidence in local government.

Whether we’re repairing streets, maintaining infrastructure, answering a 311 call, supporting employees, or protecting public health, every interaction shapes how our community views its government.

This training wasn’t about adding more work, it was about approaching the work we already do with greater purpose, empathy, and intentionality. A culture of hospitality builds stronger relationships, reduces complaints, increases employee pride, and ultimately allows us to better serve our community.

Thank you to everyone who participated today and invested in making the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City KS. Great communities are built not only by great infrastructure, but by the people who serve them every day.

KCKES was proud to welcome participants from the KCKPD Summer Youth Academy this week!

The students learned how wastewater treatment, stormwater management, and flood protection help protect public health and our community every day. More importantly, they had the opportunity to ask questions, explore careers in public service, and build relationships with those who serve our community.

Thank you to KCKPD for including KCKES in this outstanding program. Investing in our youth is investing in the future of our community. 💙💧

Proud night for Public Works!

Tonight at the Commission Meeting, Public Works was recognized for three initiatives that highlight not only the work our team does every day, but the commitment our employees have to this community beyond their normal responsibilities.

🥎 Our Charity Softball Game raised $350 for the Police Athletic League (PAL).

🎡 Several Public Works team members volunteered after hours at the Wyandotte County Fair, helping with parking and raising $1,500 to support gifts for children during the holidays.

🏆 The American Public Works Association (APWA) selected Unified Government Public Works to be spotlighted for our accreditation, a milestone achieved by only approximately 200 agencies across North America.

What makes the first two especially meaningful is that they were 100% volunteer efforts. The team gave their own time, after hours, simply to do something positive for the community they serve.

Thank you to Mayor Christal Watson, our Commissioners, and County Administration for recognizing our Public Works team tonight.

Proud of our team, proud of the work, and proud to serve Wyandotte County!

Great work by our KCKES Construction and Engineering teams! 👏

A rising manhole and nearby underground sewer repair required portions of the curb, sidewalk, and ADA ramp to be disturbed.

Our KCKES in-house construction crew stepped in to restore the area.

The video shows the before and after. Great craftsmanship, attention to detail, and pride in the work. Another great job by our team!

Public Works, along with UG Emergency Management, continues to work with our state and federal partners following the historic flash flooding that impacted communities across the Kansas City metro area in July 2025.

Recently, KDEM team members toured several locations throughout our community to see firsthand repairs that have been completed, as well as publicly owned infrastructure where repairs and improvements are still needed.

These efforts are focused specifically on public infrastructure, such as streets, stormwater systems, drainage structures, and other publicly owned assets impacted by the flooding.

Kansas’ Emergency Management Program is built around two major legislative authorities: the federal Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act, as amended, and Chapter 48, Article 9 of the Kansas Statutes Annotated.

These partnerships help our community recover from major weather events, restore damaged public infrastructure, and identify opportunities to strengthen our systems for future storms.

🌱 Keep the grass out of the street!

Grass clippings may seem harmless, but when rain washes them into storm drains, they can clog drains, contribute to street flooding, and carry nutrients into our waterways that fuel algae blooms.

A simple habit makes a difference: mow it, mulch it, or blow it back into your yard, not the street.

Small actions help protect our streets, stormwater system, and waterways. 💧🌎

⚾️ Public Works teamwork doesn’t stop when the workday ends.

Tonight, team members from several Public Works divisions, including KCKES, Streets, Fleet, Engineering, and Solid Waste, came together for a friendly softball game to raise money for the Police Athletic League of Kansas City Kansas.

A big thank you to everyone who played, volunteered, donated, and to the family and friends who came out to cheer us on. Your support helped make it a great evening for an even greater cause. 💙🥎

💧 75 Years Later… The Work Continues.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Great Flood of 1951, one of the most devastating natural disasters in our community’s history.

The flood forever changed how we approach flood protection in Wyandotte County. Since then, hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested in levees, floodwalls, pump stations, drainage systems, and other infrastructure designed to help protect our neighborhoods, businesses, and critical facilities.

Today, Kansas City, Kansas Environmental Services (KCKES), the Public Works Engineering Division, and the Public Works Street Division work alongside many dedicated partners to maintain and improve these critical systems. Those partnerships include the Kaw Valley Drainage District, Wolcott Drainage District, Fairfax Drainage District, the Unified Government, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the City of Kansas City, Missouri, the City of Edwardsville, the City of Bonner Springs, and many other local, state, and federal agencies.

Protecting our community requires continuous investment, planning, and regional partnerships. Every improvement we make today helps strengthen our ability to manage future high water events.

The lessons of 1951 still guide the work we do today. Flood protection is a team effort, and protecting our community is a commitment that continues every day.

Stormwater Fees in Action 💧

Stormwater fees help maintain and repair the infrastructure that protects our neighborhoods.

This storm drain serves several blocks during rain events. After the surrounding infrastructure failed, our team made the area safe by installing a plate while planning a permanent repair.

The repair is now complete, thanks to the skilled work of our in-house Kansas City, Kansas Environmental Services Construction Team. Investing stormwater fees back into the community, protecting the infrastructure our residents rely on every day.
