We are ready to return to school and see all your smiling faces, Wildcats! As we all come back to the building tomorrow, a gentle reminder from our social, emotional, and behavior support staff: If you see something, say something. You never know what someone is experiencing behind the scenes. For example, a mean comment out loud could be just the surface level, while underneath is bullying on social media. We want to teacher our students to navigate difficult situations and conflicts respectfully and responsibly. Don’t hesitate to tell an adult what is going on so we can support you! EJ is one of the many reasons why our boys have made it to the State Quarterfinals!

Milestone moment for Elliot Berry. The KC Washington senior point guard surpassed 1,000 career points in the Wildcats’ regular season finale. Berry is averaging 14.4 points per game this year and has helped lead the Wildcats to a 15-7 record and the No. 3 seed heading into sub-state play. Washington faces Highland Park Scots tonight with a trip to the sub-state championship on the line.

The 2026 State Wrestling tournament started near Wichita this morning. We may have broken a school record this year when SIXTEEN 🤯 Wildcats (10 Girls, 6 Bous) qualified for State after placing in the top 8 at Regionals. To celebrate their accomplishments, including the state qualifiers, our two girls that won 1st at regionals (Jaida and Reddi), and boys and girls both winning our League Tournament, we held a parade around the school hallways yesterday. Thank you to all who participated and showed their pride and school spirit. Make us proud this weekend, Wildcats!

Also, Reddi was recently featured as Athlete of the Week by KSHSAA Covered (link in comments)!

Do you spot the Wildcats? 👀

We brought 10 girls to 5A Girls Wrestling Regionals this weekend, and all 10 qualified for State.

Next weekend, our boys have their chance to qualify, and then we'll be excited to showcase our State Wrestling teams!

You won’t want to miss this!

Wednesday, February 4th, is Washington’s turn to host the annual Meadowlark League Wrestling Tournament. The tournament will begin at 4 pm. Enter through the east side doors to check out the action. Concessions will be available.

If you’re still undecided about attending, you may want to know just how strong our season has been. At the WYCO tournament in Piper recently, our boys wrestling team tied for 3rd place, while our girls placed 1st in their division. The girls also ranked at the top of three additional tournaments so far: 3rd at Rock Creek, 2nd at Bonner Springs, and 2nd at Shawnee Mission North.

We aren’t just finding success as a team, but also have several individual wrestlers shining in the top 5 rankings for their respective weight class this week: Reddi Johnson (3rd), Jaida Hawkins (2nd), and Genessa Fierro (4th). At least two of our seniors have been offered scholarships to wrestle at the collegiate level!

Due to impacts from this weekend’s snowfall, extremely cold wind chill conditions expected tomorrow morning, and ongoing safety concerns for students and staff, Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools will implement Plan D on Monday, January 26. All school campuses and district offices will be closed.

What Plan D means for students and families:
• Students will not report to school
• Morning extracurricular activities are canceled
• Afternoon and evening extracurricular activities will be decided later in the day
• KidZone is canceled

What Plan D means for staff:
• District and building administrators will work remotely
• Certified and classified staff will not report to work
• Staff essential to recovery efforts will be contacted directly by their supervisors

Wildcat Graphic Design teacher Jonathan Oregel got an opportunity recently to talk about how important it is for our students to feels represented and supported by the staff at our school. We are proud to have staff in our building that understand and reflect our unique and diverse community.

A few fun facts about diversity at Washington in the 2024-2025 school year:
- Our students were 35% Hispanic, 33% African American, 13% White, 12% Asian, 5% Multiracial, and 1% American Indian or Pacific Islander.
- In addition to English, the top 5 languages spoken by our students and families were Spanish, Burmese, Hmong, Karen languages, and Swahili.

We commit to recognizing and celebrating our diversity with pride and inclusivity. Thank you to all our students and staff that strive to help us meet that goal a little more each day!

The Latinx Education Collaborative said just 1% of educators in the Kansas City area were Latino in 2019. A new report found that share nearly tripled last school year, but the organization says there's more work to be done.
