Newhouse Shelter

Newhouse Shelter Newhouse shatters the barriers that feed the cycle of abuse and partners with survivors to achieve safety, self-sufficiency, and whole-person healing.

Newhouse is the catalyst for domestic violence survivors to rise through the impacts of their trauma, by providing an ecosystem of transformative services that lead to safety, self-sufficiency, and whole-person healing. We are Kansas City's oldest domestic violence shelter, serving Kansas City for more than 50 years since 1971. We offer safe shelter, therapy, legal advocacy, nourishing meals, chil

dcare, early learning, job training, substance dependency support, support with transitional housing, and so much more. Newhouse proudly supports courageous women, children and men who are facing domestic violence on their journey towards whole-person healing. We are always in need of volunteers and donations and welcome you to get involved with Newhouse. Learn more at newhousekc.org.

Meet two of our Imagine a Day Gala Honorary Chairs: Katie Dunn and Hillary Stamper!

Katie and Hillary are longtime supporters of Newhouse, and we’re thrilled to have them serving as Honorary Chairs for this year’s gala. They’re helping us raise awareness and the life-saving funds needed to ensure survivors and their children have a safe place to heal, rebuild and move forward.

Hillary shared: “Newhouse is so much more than a safe place to land... it’s a place where survivors and their children are given the support, resources and opportunity to truly rebuild their lives. I’m incredibly proud to support an organization that not only responds in moments of crisis, but invests in healing, independence and breaking the cycle of domestic violence for generations to come.”

Join us for the Imagine a Day Gala on November 7 and help us imagine a future where every survivor has the opportunity to build a life free from violence.

We believe showing up matters. 🤝

From Uncover KC at Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, to ShineKC hosted by The Interfaith Coalition for the Unhoused, to KC Connections hosted by genKC of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, we’ve connected with so many great people from across our community recently.

Domestic violence affects people of every background, in every neighborhood, across our city. That’s why building awareness, connection, and collaboration has to happen everywhere, too. We’re honored to meet so many people who are showing up, engaging, and working together to make KC stronger.

We’ll see you around! Is there a community event you’d like to see Newhouse at? Email [email protected].

A WIN FOR SURVIVORS + WOMEN! Today, Missouri House Bill 1908 officially takes effect.

The new law means pregnancy can no longer be used as a reason to delay a divorce or legal separation. For survivors, this matters. Leaving an abusive relationship is complicated enough. Pregnancy should never be another barrier to safety, autonomy, or the ability to move forward. Today, we celebrate this step forward for survivors, women, and families across Missouri! 💜

Last week, Newhouse joined Donnelly College’s Freshman Orientation to talk with incoming students about domestic violence, healthy relationships, and the work we do to support survivors and families.

Students also had the opportunity to give back to their community in meaningful ways, from planting flowers and writing letters of encouragement to survivors to participating in the In Her Shoes activity and more.

Education about domestic violence and healthy relationships is an important part of creating safer communities. When young people have the tools to recognize and understand the impact of violence, we can interrupt the cycle and create a different future.

🎉 THE AC IS BACK ON! 🎉 Kansas City, YOU DID IT! Between donations from social media, emails, mailed-in donations, a county grant, a family foundation grant, and an anonymous donor, we have reached our $75,000 goal to fully address the broken air conditioning system and help our clients!

On behalf of the children and adults who call Newhouse home: THANK YOU. 💜

Thank you for all the incredible ways you came forward to enable us to get emergency AC units in quickly, fund the permanent solution for our AC, and support the continued healing of the adults and children calling Newhouse their temporary home.

Today, the first half of our two-part AC system officially turned back on, and it finally feels normal again inside the shelter. The second half will be replaced in the coming months, bringing us one step closer to a fully functioning system.

Your support didn’t just fix an AC system. It reminded our residents that their community cares about them. Your generosity brought tears to our clients’ eyes.

Thank you, Kansas City, for showing up for Newhouse and the families we serve. We are so grateful for you. 💜

Happy 816 Day, Kansas City!

We were proud to celebrate our city by joining Uncover KC and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation for the 816 Day Volunteer Fair. We hosted a table to share more about Newhouse, connect with Kauffman associates, and highlight ways they can get involved in supporting survivors and families in our community.

We’re grateful for opportunities to build new relationships and connect caring Kansas Citians with meaningful ways to make a difference. Here’s to a community that ALWAYS shows up for one another. ❤️💛

Newhouse Court Advocates Kylie and Mahrukh recently traveled to Austin, TX, for the National Conference on Domestic Violence, hosted by National Domestic Violence Hotline. Over three days, they connected with advocates from across the country, learned from impactful speakers, and explored new ideas for supporting survivors and those who serve them. They especially appreciated the conference’s incorporation of live arts, demonstrating how art can help in healing; and wellness activities for those who work directly with survivors. They found meaningful opportunities to build community, share stories, and recharge together.

We’re grateful to Kylie and Mahrukh for bringing what they learned back to Newhouse and continuing to grow in their work supporting survivors. 💜
