Waiʻanae Mountains Watershed Partnership

Waiʻanae Mountains Watershed Partnership Currently, close to 50% of water used by Wai‘anae communities is brought in from the Pearl Harbor Hydrologic Unit with rainfall decreasing annually.

WMWP is a Watershed Partnership comprised of federal, state, county and
private landowners voluntarily working together to preserve the natural and
cultural resources of the Waianae Mountains. Feral ungulates (cattle, goats and pigs); habitat altering, invasive weed species; wildfire; poor management practices and other human impact has negatively impacted the Waianae Mountains causing a devastating loss of native dominant forests important for water recharge.

May Day is Lei Day in Hawai'i! We took a break from the heat and celebrated a tradition that’s 97 years old! Our crew had a good time learning how to make lei po'o and sharing food with each other. Which one is your favorite? Did you know the first “official” lei day and lei completion was held on May 1, 1928? Princess Abigail Wahiikaahuula Campbell, Elizabeth Lahilahi Webb (lady-in-waiting for Queen Liliʻuokalani) and Aliʻi Lucy Kalanikiʻekiʻe Davis were the official judges. This tradition continues with the annual Lei Day Celebration and Lei Contest held by the City and County of Honolulu. Missing Paul and Lailan!

Happy ʻŌhiʻa Lehua Day from the Waiʻanae Mountains!
Did you know that ʻŌhiʻa (Metrosideros polymorpha) trees can live for a thousand years and grow to heights of 100 feet?! They are the foundation of most native forests in Hawaii, a species important for water recharge, capturing fresh water and replenishing our aquifers.
We also have three other Metrosideros species endemic to Oahu: Metrosideros tremuloides, Metrosideros macropus and Metrosideros rugosa.
ʻŌhiʻa Lehua are threatened by Rapid Ohi’a Death (fungi Ceratocystis huliohia and Ceratocystis lukuohia) www.oahuisc.org and www.rapidohiadeath.org can help with what to do if you have trees with symptoms and additional information related to ROD.

Continuing our 15th anniversary and Earth Day celebrations with another awesome field day! Mahalo to Mr. Justo and his students for their hard work all year in their native plant nursery and on days like this in the field. Together we planted almost 400 native trees and shrubs today in our vegetative fuel break in Waianae Kai Forest Reserve (many of the plants grown by them, too🙌). Mr. Justo has been bringing his students to malama aina with us for 15 years! These vegetative fuel breaks are especially important for breaking the grass-fire cycle, reducing wildfire fuel, reducing the intensity and spread of fires, and restoring native Hawaiian plants. Shout out to our amazing crew for all of their hard work, too! Contact us if you’d like to kokua.

We celebrated our partnership’s 15th Anniversary and Earth day with some amazing haumana and volunteers in Makaha. Mahalo to for your amazing volunteers, supporting WMWP, and donating awesome Patagonia swag to share with our students! Mahalo for their continued support of conservation projects in Waianae and sending over the best employee volunteers to work with us! Mahalo to and all of the amazing haumana from Waianae High School, Kamaile School, and Nanakuli High School - they are such smart, hard working individuals that make us proud and hopeful for the future of conservation in Hawaii. Happy Anniversary, WMWP! Mahalo to all of our partners, supporters, past and present crew, and volunteers!

Mahalo to and for an amazing day in Makaha! We appreciate all of the inspirational and hard working Kumu that came to malama aina with us. 238 native plants found their permanent homes in Makaha and more invasive grasses were cleared to expand our existing fuel breaks.
