Update on Logan: Your Support is Making a Difference! 🧡

Thanks to the incredible outpouring of support from our community, we’ve raised $1,520 for Logan’s medical care! We are in awe of everyone’s generosity and can’t express our gratitude enough—every donation has been a step forward in giving Logan a real chance to heal.

Logan is a true fighter, and he’s showing his spirit every day. He’s being sent to a veterinary clinic in Sitka that’s offering more reasonable care options than the original vet in Ketchikan. We’re feeling hopeful, especially with the news that amputation might not be necessary. However, Logan is not out of the woods yet, and the vet costs are still accumulating as we work to ensure he gets the best care possible.

We are currently looking for a dog kennel for Logan’s transport—he’s around 60-70lbs, so if anyone has a kennel to lend or knows where we can find one, please reach out. Every bit of help, big or small, brings us closer to getting Logan the treatment he needs.

Welcome to the Chonk Memorial Fund—our community’s heart-driven initiative to support pet care and provide life-saving resources for pets in Kasaan. Today, we’re calling on everyone for something urgent. We need to raise funds for Logan, a beloved dog and loyal companion of Jim Jim Mackie, who has endured a nightmare journey and now faces a critical fight for his life.

After disappearing for 13 long days in the wilderness, Logan found his way back against all odds. He returned home malnourished, exhausted, and with a severe, deep injury on his leg. Logan’s leg wound, likely caused by the cable he’d broken free from, is now infected and down to the bone. He’s in urgent need of a veterinary evaluation (at least $1,100) and likely amputation surgery, with overall costs estimated between $7,000 and $10,000. This is more than any family can handle alone.

Jim Jim is a dedicated member of our community, always showing up to support others at events and gatherings. Now, it’s our turn to show up for him and Logan. Your support can help save Logan’s life and ease the burden for Jim Jim, who’s given so much to us.

This initiative was created in honor of Chonk, a beloved dog from Kasaan, whose story highlighted the need for community support in ensuring the health and safety of our pets. Kasaan is a Haida village with deep-rooted traditions, including one of the oldest histories of dog companionship in North America. Archaeological evidence from Haida Gwaii shows that the Haida people domesticated dogs over 13,000 years ago, reflecting a bond that has endured across centuries. The Chonk Memorial Fund is here to honor that legacy, supporting pets and families in our community and providing the resources they need to protect and care for their animals.

Our mission is simple: to create a compassionate safety net for pets in Kasaan. By providing financial assistance for emergency vet care, containment supplies, and essential pet needs, we aim to prevent tragedies and help pet owners care for their animals responsibly.

Whether it’s covering emergency vet bills, helping with the cost of leashes or fencing, or supporting pet rehoming, this fund is dedicated to keeping our pets safe and healthy in a village that treasures its animals. We believe that every pet deserves a chance at a safe, happy life, and we’re here to make that possible in Chonk’s memory.
