There are 200+Confederate Veterans interred in Lakeland alone.

Calling all men with Confederate ancestry:

You most likely are a descendant of an American Revolutionary War veteran.

Lieutenant General Steven Dill Lee was the commanding General of the United Confederate veterans (UCV). This organization was made up of the veterans who have served in the war between the states. By the late 1800s, it was noticed that the attendance of the veterans reunions were dropping due to aging veterans and difficulties to travel.

At the 1906 reunion, General SD Lee walked across the hall and requested to speak to "the Boys." He walked up to the podium, bent with age and only a shadow of the man he once was. His voice was frail and subdued, as he held onto the podium. He looked across the room at the young faces and reflected on their dads he had led into battle now years ago.

He then read the "Charge to the Boys",

"To you, Sons of Confederate veterans, we commit the vindication of the cause for which we fought; to your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldiers good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles he loved which you love also, and those ideas which made him glorious and which you also cherish."

The boys accepted the challenge the beloved General had challenged them with. They had already organized and established the sons of Confederate veterans, but now they had a charge to follow. Today, the members of the SCV work to fulfill that charge. It is because of this that we hold monthly meetings and teach the true history of the confederacy. It is because of this charge that we reenact the battles while wearing the uniform of our ancestors. You...have been challenged. Will you take up this Charge?

General Evander M. Law of Lakeland disbanded in the 2000s. Will you reorganize this camp? See Sheila for details.

It was my pleasure to receive the proclamation announcing June 7 as the day on which Richard Henry Lee, a distant relative of General Robert Edward Lee, proposed independence in the Continental Congress.

AHD participated in a volunteer effort to place U.S. flags on the gravesites of courageous heroes at Auburndale Memorial Cemetery. Each of us placed hundreds of flags to commemorate the sacrifices of the Fallen and Veterans, an experience that was deeply humbling and a great privilege. Please say prayers for those who gave all during this Memorial weekend.
