Strong Storms Bring Busy Night for KFD

Yesterday evening at approximately 5:30 PM, the Town of Bedford was impacted by a severe line of thunderstorms that moved rapidly through the area, causing widespread damage.

Just before the storm, our department responded mutual aid to Goldens Bridge for a structure fire at the new Mercedes-Benz dealership. Tanker 6, Ladder 39, and Cars 2211 and 2213 responded. Upon clearing the scene, units diverted and began handling multiple calls throughout the district.

Over the course of the next six hours, our members responded to numerous calls involving fallen trees on roadways, along with multiple reports of wires down and burning.

During continued post storm operations, Tanker 6 was also requested to stand by at Croton Fire Department Station 2 while they operated at a structure fire in their district.

At approximately 1:45 PM yesterday, units were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with reported entrapment on the southbound Saw Mill River Parkway, between the Route 117 Bypass and Harris Road overpass. Bedford Hills FD Car 2031 was first on scene and confirmed a vehicle lodged underneath the rear of a tractor trailer.

The sole occupant of the SUV was found to be heavily entrapped. Members of the Katonah Fire Department, Bedford Hills Fire Department, and the Westchester County Police Emergency Services Unit worked together to stabilize the vehicle and safely extricate the driver. Specialized equipment was utilized during the operation to lift and secure the tractor trailer, allowing access to the patient. The extrication was completed in approximately 30 minutes.

During the extrication, the patient received medical care on scene from Westchester EMS and Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps. The driver was conscious upon removal and was transported by ambulance to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.

The incident remains under investigation by the Westchester County Police Accident Investigation Team and detectives from the General Investigations Unit.
