Share Your Holidays food drive collection continues through "Giving Tuesday", Nov. 29th at fire stations located below. Help a family in need this holiday season.
The HCESD48 Admin. Offices are NOW CLOSED for the Thanksgiving holiday. We will return to business on November 28, 2022.
We would like to thank the American Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast for their continued support! It was brought to the attention of our Community Risk Reduction Division that EMS crews were purchasing blankets for our homeless population during cold weather snaps. Our CRR Division reached out to the Red Cross and they graciously donated blankets to the department. The blankets will be stocked on our medic units to help reduce cold weather medical emergencies.
We would like to thank one of our own HCESD48 Firefighter Jacob Fangue and his MC/Chapter Los camaradas westside crew for joining us in supporting Chief Santa's Toy Drive. The Westside Chapter has already started collecting toys at their weekly bike nights. We look forward to their partnershp and are grateful for their support in bringing a smile to a child in need this holiday season!
As Thanksgiving fast approaches, we are urging everyone to use added caution when celebrating the holiday, as Thanksgiving Day represents the leading day for home cooking fires. More than three times as many cooking fires occur on Thanksgiving Day as a typical day of the year.
According to NFPA data, cooking was the leading cause of reported home structure fires and civilian fire injuries and the second-leading cause of civilian fire deaths and direct property damage, on annual average from 2015 to 2019. On Thanksgiving Day alone, an estimated 1,400 home cooking fires were reported to U.S. fire departments in 2019, reflecting a 228 percent increase over the daily average.
Following are tips and recommendations from NFPA for cooking safely this Thanksgiving:
-Never leave the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop. Some types of cooking, especially those that involve frying or sautéing with oil, need continuous attention.
-When cooking a turkey, remain at home and check it regularly.
-Make use of timers to keep track of cooking times, particularly for foods that require longer cook times.
-Keep things that can catch fire like oven mitts, wooden utensils, food wrappers, and towels at least three feet away from the cooking area.
-Avoid long sleeves and hanging fabrics that can come in contact with a heat source.
-Always cook with a lid beside your pan. If you have a fire, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because the fire could start again. Let the pan cool for a long time. Never throw water or use a fire extinguisher on the fire.
-For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. Only open the door once you’re confident the fire is completely out, standing to the side as you do. If you have any doubts or concerns, contact the fire department for assistance.
-Keep children at least three feet away from the stove. Kids should also stay away from hot foods and liquids, as steam or splash from these items could cause severe burns.
We would like to thank Dave D. who coordinated a toy collection at a Kelliwood Estates block party. We are very grateful to their community for supporting Chief Santa's Toy Drive!

In an effort to help our residents make their homes a safer place, we established a free Home Safety Survey program in March 2016 that has helped hundreds of your friends and neighbors. During the Home Safety Survey, our personnel will conduct a 45-point survey that covers a variety of items including; fire safety, trip/fall hazards, child safety, fire extinguishers, smoke and CO alarms, emergency planning and more. Recommendations generated by the survey are generally easy to correct and doing so could prevent a tragic loss.
This is not a fire inspection. The Home Safety Survey is simply an effort to help our residents learn about the most common fire hazards that we find in our response area and how you can help your family be less likely to have an emergency. Once the survey is complete, you will have a list of recommendations that you and our team have discussed as well as some ideas on how to make your home a safer place for everyone who lives there. It's our goal to build a long-term relationship with you and your family so if anything changes or you have any further questions our team is always available to follow up with you in the future.
To schedule a Home Safety Survey you can go to our website and fill out a request on our dedicated page (https://hcesd48.org/community-risk-reduction/home-safety-survey)
For those who live in Katy but are not sure whether they live within HCESD 48’s service area, we have a district map posted on our website (https://hcesd48.org/about). Many local agencies have started offering a similar program and we would be happy to put you in touch with your agency's contact if we are not your responding agency.
We will be hosting a FREE Flu and COVID Vaccine Drive on Saturday, November 19, 2022 from 9am to 5pm at our Administration Building located at 21201 Morton Rd. To register for a time slot, please visit https://www.cognitoforms.com/BeyondLucidMediview/harriscountyesd48prevaccinationformscheduling.

HCESD 48 prioritizes the “Community Risk Reduction” philosophy by providing educational safety programs, often free of charge, that benefit the community.
Community Risk Reduction (CRR) is the identification and prioritization of risks, threats, and hazards followed by the evaluation and implementation of strategies to lessen their impact. CRR is a new concept firmly rooted in traditional fire prevention activities. The main difference is that the scope of prevention activities has expanded from fire to identifying other risk factors that threaten the safety of our community. We utilize data analysis along with anecdotal information to deploy resources to solve those problems. In addition, we build partnerships within the community to avoid duplication of efforts while implementing the right tools for the job. The result is a division committed to efficiency and effectiveness in preventing harm to our citizens and community.
The CRR Team, often referred to as the “Community Team”, is comprised of a Battalion Chief of Community Risk Reduction/Public Information Officer, Community Relations Coordinator, and volunteer members who give their time to help support our mission in the community. We believe the Community Risk Reduction Division is leading the way for a safer Greater Katy area.

HCESD48 sirens will sound tomorrow at noon as we show tribute to our fellow firefighters that died in the Line of Duty.
Congress created the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to lead a nationwide effort to honor America’s fallen firefighters. Since 1992, the non-profit Foundation has developed and expanded programs that fulfill that mandate. Their mission is to honor and remember America’s fallen fire heroes and to provide resources to assist their families in rebuilding their lives and work within the fire service community to reduce firefighter deaths and injuries.
Each October, the Foundation sponsors the official national tribute to all firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year.
This weekend marks the 41st Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend 2022. Each year, the Foundation sponsors the official national tribute to all firefighters who died in the line of duty. Thousands attend the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland in honor of the fallen. Last year, we made a video honoring those that paid the ultimate sacrifice as part of the Light the Night.
Happy to everyone who inspires, leads, and changes the world everyday by teaching!
Today we had an opportunity to meet with residents at Villas of Park Grove and share important safety information. We also gave a short demonstration on the gear our firefighters wear when responding to a fire.

We have partnered with the Harris County Sheriff's Office to bring awareness about kids and pets left in vehicles. There have been 12 hot car deaths this year, 3 of which happened in the Greater Houston Area. According to the National Safety Council, an average of 38 children die each year in the U.S. These deaths are avoidable. A special thank you to Harris Fort Bend Emergency Services District #100 Westcom Telecommunication Center, Schmidt Funeral Home, Toyota of Katy, and @Bella Media for assisting in the PSA.
Our Community Risk Reduction Division put together a PSA on the low hanging tree branches. Low hanging tree branches can delay response times of firetrucks during an emergency. These branches can not only damage firetrucks, but also cause damage to trash trucks, school buses, and other large vehicles. When seconds count, we ask you to be tree-sponsible! #CRRinAction #TreeSafety #treetrimming
You can now register for Reverse 9-1-1 right on our home page! Receive free emergency alerts on your cell phone, internet phone, text and landline phone. Alerts are issued by your local officials and sent to our community for such situations as: shelter in place and evacuations.
