CRR
HCESD 48 prioritizes the “Community Risk Reduction” philosophy by providing educational safety programs, often free of charge, that benefit the community.
Community Risk Reduction (CRR) is the identification and prioritization of risks, threats, and hazards followed by the evaluation and implementation of strategies to lessen their impact. CRR is a new concept firmly rooted in traditional fire prevention activities. The main difference is that the scope of prevention activities has expanded from fire to identifying other risk factors that threaten the safety of our community. We utilize data analysis along with anecdotal information to deploy resources to solve those problems. In addition, we build partnerships within the community to avoid duplication of efforts while implementing the right tools for the job. The result is a division committed to efficiency and effectiveness in preventing harm to our citizens and community.
The CRR Team, often referred to as the “Community Team”, is comprised of a Battalion Chief of Community Risk Reduction/Public Information Officer, Community Relations Coordinator, and volunteer members who give their time to help support our mission in the community. We believe the Community Risk Reduction Division is leading the way for a safer Greater Katy area.
National Fallen Firefighters Light the Night
This weekend marks the 41st Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend 2022. Each year, the Foundation sponsors the official national tribute to all firefighters who died in the line of duty. Thousands attend the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland in honor of the fallen. Last year, we made a video honoring those that paid the ultimate sacrifice as part of the Light the Night.
Hot Car PSA
We have partnered with the Harris County Sheriff's Office to bring awareness about kids and pets left in vehicles. There have been 12 hot car deaths this year, 3 of which happened in the Greater Houston Area. According to the National Safety Council, an average of 38 children die each year in the U.S. These deaths are avoidable.
A special thank you to Harris Fort Bend Emergency Services District #100 Westcom Telecommunication Center, Schmidt Funeral Home, Toyota of Katy, and @Bella Media for assisting in the PSA.
Our Community Risk Reduction Division put together a PSA on the low hanging tree branches. Low hanging tree branches can delay response times of firetrucks during an emergency. These branches can not only damage firetrucks, but also cause damage to trash trucks, school buses, and other large vehicles. When seconds count, we ask you to be tree-sponsible!

At 8:00, Chief Jason Tharp discussed installing sealed 10 year lithium battery smoke alarms and combination smoke and CO alarms. At 9:00, Chief Tharp was onsite at a home to discuss why it is important to have hardwired smoke alarms and how to change them. Then lastly at 10:00, we were Facebook Live on Fox 26 Houston's After Show to discuss more about different types of smoke alarms, where to place CO alarms, and the importance of having a fire extinguisher in your home. Below is a live clip from the 8:00 show.
