Katy business and education leaders visited state policymakers at the capitol today to discuss career training, workforce development and funding to support teachers, safety and more. As career training remains a central focus of the 89th Legislative Session, Katy ISD Trustee Redmon, Superintendent Gregorski and CEOs of the Katy Chamber and Economic Development Council, alongside local business leaders are collaborating to shape policies that will better prepare students and the future workforce. Madelyn Roxburgh isn’t just competing at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo—she’s breaking barriers. The Taylor High School senior, recently featured on FOX 26, has spent years dedicated to FFA, raising and training livestock with the goal of making it to auction this season with her pig, "Chicken Nugget." Born with achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism, Madelyn never let obstacles define her. She found her passion for agriculture through horseback riding therapy, later raising chickens and pigs. Now, as FFA chapter president, she spends hours each day at the Katy ISD barn honing her skills. This fall, she’ll take her dedication to Texas A&M University, majoring in poultry science. Her story is one of perseverance, passion and the power of community support. Follow the link to watch the full FOX 26 story: https://ow.ly/F7iM50VhG21

Katy ISD is continuously reinforcing its commitment to financial stewardship having recently earned a $878,570 rebate from CenterPoint Energy for its energy-saving initiatives. The district’s maintenance and operations team tirelessly implements preventative measures, including retrofitting older equipment, that improves efficiency and saves taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars annually.

Last year, 40 Katy ISD schools qualified for the Energy Star rating, and the district received the Department of Energy’s “Best in Class for Efficient and Healthy Schools” award. Through continued investment in energy-efficient upgrades, Katy ISD remains a leader in responsible resource management.

For students at McElwain Elementary, the school mascot isn’t just a symbol—it’s the star of a story brought to life by none other than the school’s namesake, Peter McElwain. The former Katy ISD architect has turned his passion for storytelling into a beloved children’s book series featuring "Ollie the Owl," a character who sparks curiosity and adventure in young readers.

McElwain’s latest book, Ollie the Owl and the Hunt for a Hoo, takes children on a journey of discovery, blending engaging storytelling with lessons about nature and friendship. Alongside his wife, Darlene, McElwain visits Katy ISD schools, reading to students and encouraging a love of books, proving that stories have the power to connect, inspire and educate.

Safe gun storage protects our kids, prevents accidents and keeps fi****ms out of the hands of criminals. Texas law requires fi****ms to be secured and failing to do so can lead to serious legal consequences. If a child gains access due to negligence, penalties range from a $500 fine to a year in jail.

To prevent tragedies, always store fi****ms unloaded in a locked container with ammunition kept separately.

Learn more about safe firearm storage and a checklist of resources at SafeGunStorageTexas.com.

Thank you for helping keep our students and community safe.
