Calling all budding journalists! The Scripps Howard Foundation and UNT Mayborn School of Journalismโs Emerging Journalists Program is designed to prepare the next generation of journalists and help ensure newsrooms better represent the broader population.
Our very own Paetow High School journalism teacher, Sara Gonzales, was selected as the 2023 Teaching Ambassador for the Emerging Journalists Program for Texas! This five-part program will create a strong mentor network between students and working journalists, a series of workshops that will encourage and recruit new cadres of students, โcareer bootcampsโ in partnership with the national associations for Black and Hispanic journalists, opportunities for students to have their work published by major news organizations, and outreach and continuing education programs for regional high school teachers.

Eight Katy ISD SkillsUSA members attended the SkillsUSA Texas Legislative Day last month, where they attended sessions on the legislative process in Texas, how a bill originates and becomes a law and they were introduced to parliamentary procedure.
Students then visited the Texas House of Representatives and participated in mock debate bills using the parliamentary procedure process they learned. Congratulations to these students and their instructors!

Congratulations to the Tompkins High School CyberFalcons team for winning 1st place at the 2023 Hewlett Packard Enterprise CodeWars! Codewars is a first-class computer programming competition for high school students. The event was first hosted at the Hewlett Packard Houston campus in 1998 and has since expanded to multiple Hewlett Packard Enterprise and HP Inc. locations across the globe. The OTHS team is the first team from Katy ISD to take 1st place at Codewars. Way to go, CyberFalcons!
Did you know that Katy ISD has the largest Junior Achievement Program in the world? To help introduce JA to our elementary students, the Katy ISD PALS program presented JA programs to the 4th graders of WoodCreek Elementary! These peer assistant leaders dedicated their school day to teaching students about entrepreneurship, goods and services, and international trade.

The Katy High School Jazz Band recently held their annual fundraising event, Sentimental Journey. Sentimental Journey began in 1984, and has ebbed and flowed through the last 30 years of KHS music education.
Funds from the event are used to purchase new instruments for student rental (being the original high school in the District, KHS has many instruments that are in need of updating), provide opportunities for students to benefit from world-class clinicians, and fund participation in regional jazz competitions. A sentimental journey indeed, what a magical evening, Tigers! ๐ถ

Online preregistration for the Katy ISD Pre-Kindergarten program for 2023-2024 opens April 3! Parents must complete the online registration in order for their child to be screened for eligibility. The Katy ISD Pre-K program follows the state guidelines, which focus on oral language development, reading and math readiness, as well as science and social studies knowledge and skills. Over 150 Katy ISD AP Research students gathered recently for the 2023 AP Research Conference Poster Session to showcase their work. AP Research students deeply explore an academic topic, problem, issue, or idea of individual interest and design, plan and implement a year-long investigation to address their research question. Students reflect on their skill development, document their processes, and curate the artifacts of their scholarly work through a process and reflection portfolio. The course culminates in an academic paper of 4000-5000 words and a presentation with an oral defense. Congratulations to these scholars and their teachers!

Continuing in our celebration of National Arts in Education week, today we are highlighting Beckendorff Junior Theatre's directors, Mrs. Hernandez and Mr. Oliver! Mrs. Hernandez has been teaching theatre at Beckendorff JH since 2010. She grew up in Katy and is a Katy ISD alumna. She was nominated as First Year Teacher of the Year for BDJH in 2011 and was awarded Teacher of the Year for the 21-22 school year. Mrs. Hernandez is also the head director for this year's holiday production of Elf Jr., The Musical! Mr. Oliver has been at BDJH since 2018. He was awarded the All-Star Beginner Teacher of the Year two years in a row in Putnam City School District where he was previously the Director of Theatre Arts. Elf Jr. will be presented by BDJH in December. Thank you Mrs. Hernandez and Mr. Oliver for inspiring the BDJH theatre students to explore their talents and love for the theatre arts! #ArtsEdWeek #ArtsinEducation
