Opinion: Management districts fill the gaps between city's pandemic losses

This is an excellent example of what special purpose districts can do when the work together to tell their story. Most people don't know what a management districts is or how it works but when a district finds a way to highlight their contribution to a community within the context of a shared current experience you can catch their attention.

Cuts to city budget show why management districts fill gaps

2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season Has Begun

Monday, June 1st, 2020 marked the first day of the Atlantic hurricane season, with another named storm brewing in the Gulf of Mexico.

Two tropical storms, Arthur and Bertha, formed in May ahead of the official start of the season: Arthur formed about 190 miles east-northeast of Cape Canaveral, FL, while Bertha formed near the coast of South Carolina and then made landfall approximately 20 miles east of Charleston.

The next named storm developing this season has been named Cristobal (as of Tuesday morning, June 2, 2020). The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a large area of disturbed weather over southern Mexico and has given the area an 80% chance of development over the Bay of Campeche in the next 48 hours.

This large disturbance was originally Pacific Tropical Storm Amanda, which formed quickly across the eastern Pacific over the weekend but has since dissipated as it made landfall in Central America and southern Mexico.

For more information on Hurricane Season forecasting, hurricane facts, and the 2020 Hurricane Season Names, go to the CCFD website for the full article: https://cypresscreekfire.com/news-events/2020-atlantic-hurricane-season-has-begun

On Saturday, May 30th was a beautiful day for so many reasons. In the midst of a worldwide pandemic, our team had the opportunity to #ServeThroughIt and help distribute food to 468 families and 2,227 individuals who needed it. When communities come together, great things can happen and our team and families got to be a small part of that today. Will you join us on June 27th for the next big food distribution event?

Thank you to Houston Food Bank, Attack Poverty, Friends of Sundown, Compassion Katy, Feed the Hunger and Hope City Missions for putting this great event together.

It was a pleasure to serve along side The Waters Church, The Fellowship, Grace Fellowship Church, Ted Heap, Harris County Constable Precinct 5, Chick-fil-A Mason Road, Members Choice Credit Union, Chick-fil-A Leader Academy, KSBJ, National Charity League, Inc. and Dream Movement Katy and hope to do it again soon.

On Wednesday (May 20th) some of our team as well family members had the opportunity to serve our Katy community. Covid-19 has impacted thousands of people across our region and for many families who have remained healthy it has been by impacting their income and ability to put food on the table. Thankfully through the efforts of Attack Poverty, Friends of Sundown and Houston Food Bank we were able play a part in helping to distribute a weeks worth of food to over 2,000 people.

Big thanks to Fry Road MUD for being so generous with the use of their Administration building as a distribution point. It's actions like these that demonstrate one of the many ways that #MUDsAreGoodForTexas.

Thank you to Nicholas Doherty with Supply Bridge Ministries for connecting us to these great orgainizations. We look forward to many more opportunities to make a difference with our companies #SupportingLocalCommunities initiative.

One of our ESD clients is participating in the Marine Toys for Tots initiative this holiday season.

This is a cause dear to our hearts, not only as support for children in the Greater Houston Area, but because this is a cause our very own Michael Willett participated in during his service in the USMC.

All of Cypress Creek Fire Department's stations will be drop off locations for this toy drive. Be sure to stop by, thank the department for all they do, and donate for the children!

CCFD/HCESD13 Support Marine Toys for Tots

Cypress Creek Fire Department is proud and honored to be a local drop-off point this holiday season for residents wishing to donate toys for children in need. Last year alone, the Marine Toys for Tots program distributed 39,285 toys to 9,150 children in the Harris County area. They are looking for even greater participation this year through their donation program, and we encourage everyone to assist us in helping them reach that goal.

CCFD/HCESD13 will be accepting toy donations at every fire station within the district. Marine Toys for Tots would like to have the toys by December 14th in order to have time to sort them and get them where they need to go. If you still have toys that need to be picked up after December 14th, please navigate to the Marine Toys for Tots website ( http://waller-tx.toysfortots.org/local-coordinator-sites/lco-sites/local-contact-us.aspx ) to arrange to either have them picked up, or have them dropped off to the campaign.

For Station locations and to contact us, please go to the CCFD/HCESD13 website Contact Us page: http://cypresscreekfire.com/contact-us

About Marine Toys for Tots:
Toys for Tots has enjoyed over a half-century of success because of the support of millions of caring Americans, local communities, and corporate America plus the dedication and hard work of thousands of U.S. Marines. Toys for Tots is a program bringing all elements of a community together in a common cause each year. It is a program dedicated to helping in the development of our nation’s most valuable natural resource – our children. Toys for Tots delivers a message of hope to children who have little reason to have hope for the future. The shiny new toy at Christmas lets these youngsters know that someone cares. The goal is to motivate economically disadvantaged children to grow into responsible, productive and patriotic citizens and community leaders. The good news is that Marines have been accomplishing this goal for 72 years.

For information and details about events, please go to the Marine Toys for Tots page: http://www.facebook.com/Toys-for-Tots-Houston-Suburban-272015899490001/?ref=aymt_homepage_panel

Select shots from the September 6th filming for the Mutual Aid Education video releasing later this month.

Cypress Creek Fire Department / Harris County ESD 13 have teamed up with other area agencies to film an educational video showcasing how mutual aid agreements work when a major incident happens in the community.

On September 6th, CCFD/HCESD 13 set a staged incident for filming in conjunction with Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department, Northwest Volunteer Fire Department, Northwest EMS, City of Tomball and Tomball Fire Department. As part of the event, we hosted special guests from the Cypress Homeschool Council and the Cypress Homeschool Association as children and families in distress to show how mutual aid works as seconds count on-scene.

The full educational video will be coming out in a couple of weeks with scenes from other departments throughout northwest and northeast Harris and neighboring counties, so stay tuned for more information.

Today’s meeting of the Public Service Communicators Association was hosted by Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner's Office. It’s always a great group of communications professionals and a chance to network with fellow communicators from surrounding agencies in northern Harris County. Commissioner Jack Cagle stopped by and gave us a quick update changes within the precinct and the highlights of the new facility.

Touchstone's very own Michael Willett was a participant in this course, earning not just the certification as a PIO but also taking additional self-study courses to further his knowledge.

Join us in congratulating Michael in adding to our collective PIO background and increasing our PR and Community Outreach skills!

TDEM's Carman Apple and HCFMO's PIO Rachel Moreno taught FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency G290 Basic PIO to a great group of PIOs from across the region this week! Students learned about the role of a PIO, spoke to local media, and practiced providing statements. Thanks again to Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department for hosting the class.
