If you have a live Christmas tree, we encourage you to recycle it after the holiday and we are here to help! Our Public Works Department will be picking up and recycling Christmas trees again this year. To accommodate when residents would like to take down their trees, we will have two dates for collection:
• The first pick-up will be on Monday, December 28th.
• The second pick-up will be on Thursday, January 7th.

On these days, make sure you have placed your tree at the curb by 8 AM. Due to the volume of trees, the pick-up may take a few days. The trees must have all decorations, ornaments, tinsel, lights and stands removed to be recycled. Flocked trees and/or artificial trees cannot be recycled.

If you are not able to recycle your trees during our collection days, alternate locations for tree recycling are:
• Living Earth - Katy West, 27733 Katy Freeway, Katy, TX 77494
• New Earth, 6205 FM 2855, Katy, TX 77493

Christmas is almost here and that means a yummy Christmas dinner is being planned! Cease the Grease this holiday season and protect your pipes - Don’t pour fats, oils, and grease down your sink!

When fats, oils, and grease go down the drain, it hardens and causes sewer pipes to clog. This can lead to a sanitary sewer overflow where raw sewage actually backs up into your home, lawn, neighborhood, and streets. Not only does this nasty mess cause health issues, but it also can run into a nearby stream or river, which affects our drinking water. If your pipes become clogged, it can be a very expensive problem to fix.

When you have finished cooking, collect liquid grease and oils in a sealable container that you can take to be recycled. For the grease that cannot be poured into the container, you should wipe pans clean with a paper towel and put them in the trash. Food scraps should also go in the trash.

Cease the Grease and recycle it instead at one of the following locations:

Fort Bend County Recycling Center
1200 Blume Road Rosenberg, TX 77471

Harris County Recycling Center

This year marks the 79th anniversary of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Though almost eight decades have passed, the lives of the fallen, as well as those who served in WWII, will never be forgotten. We remember and honor them for their courage and the sacrifices they made to protect this country.

RUST STAINS ON LAUNDRY DUE TO 12/1/20 WATER LINE INCIDENT

Today we experienced an unexpected interruption in water service resulting in brown/discolored water for residents. Many residents have reported brown stains on their laundry caused by rust and sediment in the water lines. Below are steps to remove rust stains. If you do not have rust eliminator product to help remove these stains, please go to the Utility Billing Department at City Hall located at 901 Ave C and the City will provide a small bottle of Rust Stain Remover.

How to remove rust stains from your laundry:

If you need to remove rust stains from clothes, do not dry them first. Heat stabilizes the rust stains and makes them nearly impossible to eliminate from any type of clothing. Instead, try performing these steps to remove rust stains:

• Immediately rewash clothes using a heavy duty detergent in clear water. Run a full washer to see if water is still discolored. If it is, wash clothes at a laundromat.

• Use a commercial rust eliminator such as Iron-Out or Rit rust remover. These items contain hydrofluoric or oxalic acid compound that loosens rust from most fabrics. Make sure these clothes are thoroughly rinsed because any acid remaining will deteriorate clothes. In addition, these rust removers are only intended for colorfast material or white clothing.

If you have any questions, please call Public Works at 281-391- 4820. We apologize for the inconvenience this interruption has caused.

11/30/2020

Freezing conditions are expected tonight into early Tuesday with low temperatures near or below freezing. A Freeze Warning is in effect from midnight to 8AM Tuesday. Be sure to protect your sensitive outdoor vegetation and your pipes!

Why Pipe Freezing is a Problem - Water expands as it freezes and pipes that freeze most frequently are those that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like attics, garages or kitchen cabinets. Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation are also subject to freezing.

How To Prevent Your Pipes From Freezing:
• Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following manufacturer's or installer's directions.
• Remove, drain, and carefully store all hoses that are used outdoors.
• Both hot and cold-water pipes in unheated areas should be insulated. A hot water supply line can freeze just as easily as a cold-water supply.
• Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a "pipe sleeve" or installing UL-listed "heat tape", "heat cable" or similar materials on exposed or susceptible to freezing water pipes.
• When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by pipes that are susceptible to freezing. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing because the temperature of the water running through them is above freezing.

If you suspect that the plumbing may be frozen at the point where the pipe goes under the house or in the attic, it is safest to call a plumber as it may be cracked and burst when thawed.

In the event of an emergency, please contact the Water Department at 281-391-4820 or after hours at 281-391-4848. Water running in the street or buckled pavement are signs of a water main break and should be reported immediately.

Even with all the chaos 2020 has presented us with, there is still so much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. We’d even argue one of the greatest gifts this challenging year has given us was a new perspective on the things we’ve been taking for granted all this time! A new perspective on just how grateful we are for the simplest of things. And while many are still struggling this Thanksgiving, we hope you are able to take a moment and practice some gratitude for all the lessons 2020 has brought us.

We appreciate all of our resident's support this year and are grateful for the Katy community. Happy Thanksgiving from the City of Katy!

Ho Ho Ho! It's that time of year again!! The Katy Fire Department has announced their 2020 Santa Tour Schedule. The tours will start on November 30th and will go through December 16th.

Santa and his elves will leave the North Pole at 6:30pm each night. Listen for the "sleigh bells" as Santa enters your street. Visit the Katy Fire Department page daily for a map of Santa's nightly route.

Santa's sleigh will be followed by helper Elves in a marked KFD truck stopping to collect your generous donations of non-perishable canned goods to deliver to the local Katy Food Pantry and unwrapped toys for the Lions Club and Toys-for-Tots Programs.

Due to COVID-19, they are asking that if you are going to donate to place your donations in the back of the truck yourselves to limit contact and keep the Elves safe. Please practice social distancing while waiting for Santa to drive down your street.

We can't wait to see you all this Holiday Season!!!
