I had the privilege of attending the Women in Criminal Justice conference in Galveston, an event that brought together over 500 women in the criminal justice sector. I had the opportunity to meet with a wide range of professionals, including deputies, officers, parole and probation officers, and treatment center providers, mostly from Texas but also from other parts of the country. It was an honor to be selected as one of the conference presenters.

As we observed Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, we were reminded of the difficulties faced by victims and their children. To support victims of abuse in their transition to independence, we are collecting small personal items for 'go bags.' We invite community members to contribute to this effort by dropping off donations at the courthouse, Latham's bakery in Forney, or Latham's bakery in Kaufman. This two-week initiative aims to collect essential items before the holidays. Thank you for your generosity in supporting this project.

Another positive outcome on an unbelievably egregious sexual assault of a baby. Not only did my office do a good job presenting the evidence-the judge did a great job sentencing the defendant to LIFE.

KAUFMAN, Tex. — District Attorney Erleigh Norville Wiley announced today, the LIFE sentence of Christian Hives-Barber, age 19, to the Texas penitentiary for the violent sexual assault of a 22-month-old child. After accepting a plea of guilty, Honorable Judge Shelton Gibbs IV of the 422nd District Court of Kaufman County, heard testimony from medical personnel, law enforcement, and the parents of the victim and swiftly sentenced Hives-Barber to life imprisonment for the first-degree felony offense of Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child.

The evidence revealed on December 9, 2023, the Defendant was left alone with multiple children at an in-home daycare facility run by the Defendant’s mother. The Defendant was neither licensed nor approved to be alone with any child. Honorable Judge Shelton Gibbs IV heard medical details of what was done to the child as well as the deep psychological impact on the family. After a full day of testimony and evidence, Hives-Barber was swiftly sentenced to life imprisonment with no possibility of parole.

The prosecution was led by Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Alysia Huskey and W. Jackson Heard, Investigator Sandra Ortiz, paralegal Amanda Morris, and Victim Assistance Coordinator Sabrina Mumaw. Additionally, the District Attorney’s Office would like to thank the Crandall Police Department, The REACH Clinic of Children’s Health in Dallas, and the Department of Family and Protective Services for their hard work and dedication.

The victim’s family has expressed the following: “We would like to thank everyone in the KCDA office who worked tirelessly over the past 20 months and Judge Shelton Gibbs IV to bring this tragic case to a close. We are pleased with the sentencing and are relieved that no one else will become a victim of this offender. We can finally move on to continue healing emotionally.”
