We’ve had a few recent situations where people have brought in or dropped off ducklings or goslings at the Nature Center. Just a heads-up that 1000 Islands isn’t able to rehabilitate wildlife, and also releasing animals on the property is prohibited. If you come across an animal that may need help, please contact Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary or Wildlife Of Wisconsin (W.O.W.). They are licensed wildlife rehabilitators and are best equipped to provide the proper care. Thank you for helping keep our local wildlife safe!

🚨Lights Out Alert! 🚨 Tonight, an estimated 17.6 million birds will fly over Wisconsin!

We’re urging everyone to turn off or dim non-essential outdoor lights and close window shades from 11 p.m.–6 a.m. to help birds safely on their journey.

Most birds migrate at night, and light pollution can disorient them, leading to deadly window collisions. In addition to turning down the lights, you can also help by treating windows. If you’re looking for a quick fix, draw lines on your windows (no more than 2” apart) with a bar of soap or washable window markers.

A few simple steps can save countless birds, conserve energy, and protect our night skies. 🌌🐦

Want migration alerts sent straight to your inbox? Sign up for Cornell Lab of Ornithology BirdCast alerts through the link in the comments. BirdCast added 4 Wisconsin cities this year: Appleton, La Crosse, Madison, and Milwaukee. If you don’t live near one, choose the closest city to you.

BirdCast sends alerts only on the biggest migration nights; about 8–10 nights each season that account for roughly half of all migration traffic.

In April, 6th graders in Mrs. Turgeon's science classes ventured to 1000 Islands for a lesson on human impact. Mr. G and Ms. Kat had a wonderful activity planned - they needed updated signage for their runoff pollution education display, so they had students design new ones. After displaying all of the posters, they plan to use the most impactful ones for permanent signs! If you're at 1000 Islands in the near future - check out their wonderful work!

It's World Migratory Bird Day! This year's theme is "Every bird counts - Your observations matter!"
As a "High Flyer" Bird City USA community, Kaukauna continues to do it's part to support migratory birds. From simple acts such as keeping outside lights off during heavy migration periods to always keeping cats indoors, we make a difference in supporting bird populations and their role in a healthy ecosystem.
Celebrate WMBD today at the 1000 Islands Nature Center with an 'on your own' birding scavenger hunt, kids craft, and some great books about birds. Binoculars are available to check out at the front desk for your bird watching hike! At 1:00pm, join us for a build your own Oriole orange feeder program. ($5 cash donation per feeder kit - building will take place in the pavilion behind the Center.)
