Kaukauna — The Kaukauna Fire Department responded this evening at approximately 8:00 PM to report of a structure fire on the 100 block of Grant Street in Kaukauna. Initial reports indicated “lots of smoke coming from the first floor.” The Kaukauna Fire Department arrived on scene to find smoke coming from the front door and the entire home filled with smoke. A full scene assessment revealed the fire was located in the basement, and the resident had safely evacuated prior to our arrival. Fire crews were able to make their way to the basement and quickly knock down the fire. The fire was fully extinguished within 30 minutes of arrival. Crews remained on scene for an extended period ventilating the basement of smoke and gases.
No civilians or firefighters were hurt in the fire, but one resident was displaced. Damage to the building and its contents are estimated to be $100,000. Fire damage was confined to the basement, however, the first floor sustained significant smoke damage as well. The Kaukauna Fire Department was assisted by Little Chute Fire Department, Kaukauna Police Department, WE Energies, Kaukauna Utilities and the American Red Cross.
No cause has been determined at this time. The single occupant of the home was woken from their sleep by working smoke detectors. The Kaukauna Fire Department reminds everyone to install and maintain working smoke detectors in their homes. This incident serves as an important reminder that smoke detectors can provide critical early warning to save lives.
