Understanding Wildfire Status

Wildfire status updates help the public understand the current condition of a fire and the level of risk it poses.

New / Reported Fire

A wildfire has been detected and firefighters are responding. Size and behavior may still be unknown.

Active Fire

The fire is currently burning and spreading. Fire crews are working to contain it.

Contained

A control line has been established around the fire. The fire may still burn within the perimeter, but spread beyond the containment lines is not expected.

Controlled

The fire has been fully secured, and little to no additional firefighting action is needed.

Out

The fire is completely extinguished, with no remaining heat sources that could reignite.

Other Terms You May See

* Acres Burned – Total area affected by the fire.
* Percent Contained – Percentage of the fire perimeter that has secure control lines.
* Fire Behavior – How actively the fire is burning (creeping, smoldering, torching, crowning, etc.).
* Evacuation Ready – Be prepared to leave quickly if conditions worsen.
* Evacuation Set – Be ready to leave at a moment’s notice.
* Evacuation Go – Leave immediately.

3. S – Squeeze the handle slowly
4. S – Sweep side to side at the base of the flames
