On Thursday, September 3rd, at approximately 5:30 p.m., the Powder River Fire District was paged for a reported fire west of Hazelton Road.

Before PRFD units arrived on scene, it was determined that the fire was located in Washakie County. Three PRFD units continued on to provide mutual aid assistance to the Ten Sleep Fire Department, working alongside firefighters throughout the night.

At the time PRFD personnel were released from the incident on September 4th, the Cow Camp Fire had grown to approximately 250 acres.

The fire is now under the management of a Wyoming Type 3 Incident Management Team and is currently reported at 282 acres and 43% contained.

We are proud of our firefighters for their willingness to assist our neighboring departments and communities when called upon. Mutual aid and cooperation between agencies are an important part of wildland fire response across Wyoming.

🚩 RED FLAG WARNING EXTENDED 🚩

The Red Flag Warning has been extended through Friday, September 4th.

Hot temperatures, very low humidity, and gusty winds will continue to create critical fire weather conditions across the area. Any fire that starts may spread rapidly and be difficult to control.

🔥 Use extreme caution with anything that could create a spark.
🔥 Avoid outdoor burning.
🔥 Secure trailer chains and equipment that could drag or spark.
🔥 Properly extinguish ci******es and other smoking materials.
🔥 Report any signs of wildfire immediately.

Please stay alert and help us prevent human-caused fires during these critical conditions.

🔥🔥Fire weather concerns return to the Cowboy State even after recent showers and thunderstorms over the past few weeks. The remainder of the work week will see elevated to near critical fire weather conditions as winds increase and moisture lessens.

🔥 FIRE WEATHER WATCH – THURSDAY AFTERNOON & EVENING 🔥

The National Weather Service in Riverton has issued a Fire Weather Watch for much of central, north-central, northwest, southwest, and west-central Wyoming.

For Johnson County, critical fire weather conditions are possible Thursday afternoon through Thursday evening.

💨 Winds: Southwest 15–25 mph, gusting up to 40 mph
💧 Humidity: 12–15%
🌡️ Temperatures: 80s to near 90°F in lower elevations east of the Continental Divide

Hot temperatures, very low humidity, and strong gusty winds could lead to rapid fire spread and erratic fire behavior.

Please use extra caution with anything that could create a spark or start a fire. Stay alert for updated forecasts and the possibility of a Red Flag Warning.

Powder River Fire District Chief Mark Haines has been serving on the Elk Fire in Colorado during a 14-day assignment with Wyoming Type 3 Incident Management Team 2, where he is serving as the team’s Safety Officer.

We are incredibly proud of Chief Haines and his continued commitment to supporting the fire service — here at home, throughout Wyoming, and across the nation.

Assignments like this not only provide valuable support to communities impacted by wildfire, but also bring experience and knowledge back to our own district.
