Humans cause around 85% of unwanted, unplanned wildfires in the U.S. Escaped or reignited debris burns are a leading cause of these fires.

* Human-caused fires also tripled the length of wildfire season because people ignite fires in spring, fall, and winter when lightning is less common.

* Nationally, human-caused fires account for more than 50,000 wildfires per year in some years.

* Even though lightning fires can burn larger remote areas, human-caused fires are often closer to homes and communities, making them especially dangerous.

* Human-caused ignitions are especially common along roads, recreation areas, and near populated communities.

Wildfire Awareness Month is observed every May to encourage communities to prepare for wildfire season and reduce risks to homes, land, and lives. It’s especially important in fire-prone regions across the U.S.

🌲 Why It Matters

* Wildfires are becoming more frequent and intense
* Human activity causes most wildfires
* Preparation can save homes and lives

This month we will be focusing on how to create a defensible space around your home, ways to prevent wildfire, and how to prepare if evacuation is needed.

🔥 Simple Comparison

Stay safe out there.
