Thank you Kearney Missouri Police Department for coming to the chamber office this morning to speak to the Kearney Business Group. You told us about this incident, but failed to share that it occurred just outside our front door. This is one example why the Kearney Chamber Board of Directors has endorsed Proposition P. Thank you for serving and protecting.

While most of Kearney was enjoying their morning coffee today, our officers were already at work removing drugs and dangerous drivers from our community.

Just before 7:00 AM this morning, officers stopped a reckless driver with plates expired nearly two years. The 43 year old Kansas City man was a wanted felon with multiple warrants, a revoked license, no insurance and had packaged methamphetamine with drug paraphernalia.

He was arrested, booked into the Clay County Jail and taken off the streets of Kearney.

New scam alert: we're working a case in which a scammer called a local business and tried to convince an employee to turn over all the cash on hand.

The scammer claimed to be a lieutenant with a local police department and said the business was being investigated for counterfeit bills. He told the employee to gather all the cash in the register and take it to a store in Smithville to hand it over to him "for evidence." We are unsure whether the suspect planned to meet in person or have her deposit it in a crypto-currency ATM.

He asked for the employee's name and date of birth, and when she provided it, he informed her of her parents' names and her address, leading her to believe the caller was legitimate. Scammers are able to gather this information from various sources - some public record, others obtained nefariously from things like data leaks - to try to establish legitimacy. Just because a caller knows information about you does not mean they are real law enforcement.

The employee took the cash and was driving to the store the scammer indicated when the business owner heard about what was going on, called and told her it was a scam, and to return to the business. Fortunately, this prevented the loss. Investigation is ongoing

Small businesses, please be alert. If law enforcement needs to speak with you or your employees, we will show up in person.
