What We Do Wednesday

Did you know that AirCare responds to scene flights?

This means that any EMS crew or fire department on a scene can request AirCare to respond and land in a designated landing zone nearby. AirCare is also happy to meet EMS crews at local hospital helipads for patient rendezvous. In many cases, this allows the patient to transfer directly to the aircraft without ever entering the hospital, helping avoid delays and unnecessary EMTALA processes so the patient can get to definitive care faster.

We also understand that situations can change quickly. Even after AirCare has launched, if crews on scene determine that air transport is no longer needed, that’s okay. Patient care and safety always come first and we are always happy to turn around if the situation changes with absolutely no strings attached!

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

As we spend time with family and friends this weekend, we remember the true meaning of Memorial Day and hold close the memory of our fallen heroes.

What We Do Wednesday!

Did you know that AirCare is a hospital-based program?

Being hospital based gives our crew the opportunity to collaborate closely with departments across CHI Health Good Samaritan Hospital, including the ICU, ER, EMS, Surgery, and Mother/Baby, and NICU. These relationships help strengthen teamwork, communication, and continuity of care for the patients we serve both in the air and on the ground.

Many of our crew members also work in other departments throughout the hospital, allowing us to build strong partnerships and maintain advanced clinical skills through real-world experience every day.

This environment provides valuable opportunities for live skill experience, including:
• Live intubations
• Intraosseous (IO) IV placement
• Chest tube placement
• EMS field response calls
• Observing live births
• Working alongside neonatal nurse practitioners
• Impella, Balloon pump (IABP), and ECMO patient experiences

These experiences help ensure our crews remain prepared to deliver high-level critical care whenever and wherever our patients need us!

What we do Wednesday!

AirCare’s story began in 1982 at Good Samaritan Hospital, driven by a growing need for rapid, critical care transport, especially for newborns and seriously ill patients across central and southern Nebraska. What started as conversations between physicians, hospital leaders, and aviation entrepreneur Ron Rodgers quickly turned into action.

In a moment of unexpected inspiration during a hospital stay, the vision for a medical helicopter service became clear. Within weeks, that vision took flight as Ron’s Fairchild-Hiller FH-1100 helicopter was reconfigured for medical transport, launching what would become a vital service for the region.

“The Good Samaritan” was born and during the first year, AirCare flew 69 patients, mostly consisting of neonates. Today, our flight volume is significantly increased and our patient complexity and age-range varies greatly!

Today we are doing throwback Thursday a little differently! The clock in the middle of this post is currently hanging in the Webster County Community Hospital. That got us thinking... What other relics of AirCare past are out there? Post your oldest AirCare memorabilia, photo (some of our flight nurse predecessors could be considered "vintage" so make sure you tag them), or publication. We will pick two entries to receive an AirCare gift basket with some "modern" memorabilia!
