Deputy Howe and K9 Fritz recently received a thoughtful surprise from community member Mary Schleichart of Grand Island — a custom engraved cup and coaster made especially for the team.

Gestures like this may seem small, but they mean a great deal to the deputies, staff, and K9 teams who serve our community each day. The support, encouragement, and kindness shown by members of the public never go unnoticed.

Thank you, Mary, for taking the time to recognize Deputy Howe and Fritz. Community support is one of the things that makes Buffalo County such a special place to serve.

Last week, our Citizens Academy participants got a behind-the-scenes look at the Kearney Police Department and Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Unit (ESU).

Members of the team discussed their various roles, specialized training, and the equipment used during high-risk incidents. Participants also had the opportunity to get a hands-on look at some of the specialized vehicles and gear utilized by the team.

Programs like Citizens Academy help strengthen understanding, transparency, and connections between law enforcement and the community we serve.

WHAT A NIGHT ACROSS KEARNEY & BUFFALO COUNTY

This impressive view captured the storms as they moved into the Kearney area last night. Those storms brought intense lightning, heavy rain, damaging winds, and large hail to parts of Central Nebraska.

Across Buffalo County, many residents woke up to downed tree limbs, scattered debris, power outages, and other storm damage.

We hope everyone made it through the night safely. We also want to recognize the utility crews, road departments, first responders, and others who have been out since the storm passed — clearing hazards, assessing damage, and working to restore services for our communities.

If you experienced damage: Take photos for insurance purposes

⚠️ Stay well away from downed power lines
🚧 Use caution around flooded roads, fallen branches, and debris
📱 Report outages or significant damage to the appropriate local utility or officials as needed

We know many people captured just how powerful this storm was. Feel free to share photos or reports from around Kearney and Buffalo County in the comments.

Please stay weather aware today, as additional storms — some potentially severe — remain possible later this afternoon and evening.

The sunshine is back.
The windows are down.
The playlist is up. 🎵

Just don’t let your speed creep up with it.

We know summer driving season is here, but speed limits still apply — even on beautiful Nebraska days. Drive safe, Buffalo County.

Media Press Release – Buffalo County to Participate in “Make It Click” Safety Mobilization

The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded a traffic safety grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office, allowing additional deputies to take part in the National Make It Click Mobilization from May 15–31, 2026.

During the Memorial Day travel period, extra deputies will be out at select locations across Buffalo County focusing on traffic safety - especially seatbelt use. This isn’t about numbers or citations; it’s about preventing tragedies on our roadways. Nebraska continues to see an increase in unrestrained occupants involved in crashes, and too many families have been forever changed because of it.

Our goal is simple: help keep Buffalo County residents and their families safe on the roads during this year’s Memorial Day holiday. Seatbelts remain one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce serious injuries and deaths in a crash.

We appreciate the continued support of our community and hope everyone has a safe, buckle-up-every-trip holiday and summer.

This release is being shared as a public service to the news media and citizens of Buffalo County.

This National Police Week, the Kearney Police Department and Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office pause to remember the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.

Behind every badge is a family that serves too — families who have endured missed holidays, late-night calls, uncertainty, and, for some, unimaginable loss. Their sacrifice is part of this profession, and it should never be forgotten.

Last Thursday, members of our agencies, fellow first responders, and community members gathered at the Law Enforcement Center to honor those fallen officers and reflect on the legacy they left behind.

We remember them not only for how they died, but for how they lived — serving their communities with courage, compassion, and commitment.

To the families who continue carrying that loss while supporting those still serving today: thank you. We could not do this job without you.

During National Police Week, and every week, we remember.
