Kearney (pronounced ˈkɑrni') is the county seat of Buffalo County, Nebraska, United States. It is located near the banks of the Platte River and is located in south central Nebraska. Located squarely at the nation's mid-point, 1,733 miles to Boston and 1,733 miles to San Francisco along US Highway 30 and Interstate 80, Kearney is a crossroads for commerce and culture. Kearney's population is approximately 32,000 people as of 2013. It is home to the University of Nebraska-Kearney. Kearney is also home to the Great Platte River Road Archway which spans more than 300 feet across Interstate 80. Today we say thank you and good luck to Officer Lane Cacek as he begins a new chapter.

Officer Cacek joined KPD in 2022 and has been an outstanding officer and teammate. During his time with the department, he earned the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Hero Award in 2024, 2025, and 2026 for his dedication to combating impaired driving and helping keep our community safe. He also served as a valued member of our Emergency Services Unit.

Officer Cacek's professionalism, work ethic, and commitment to serving others have made a lasting impact on our department and community. He will be greatly missed.

Please join us in thanking Officer Cacek for his service and wishing him the very best in his future endeavors!

KPD and BCSO drone teams recently conducted drone training together at Cottonmill Park. Both teams have the ability to drop small life saving devices to victims in emergency situations where it would be difficult for rescue personnel to access quickly.
This training focused on dropping things such as life jackets and emergency auto-inflating life preservers to a person in the lake as well as on ground targets in a quick, accurate and safe manner in windy conditions. This is an important skill on a windy day since the wind effects where things land when they are dropped, as well as the behavior of the drone.
We are continually looking for the best ways to serve our communities and provide emergency assistance to anyone in need.

As the weather gets nicer and more people are enjoying downtown, we'd like to kindly remind everyone that bicycles, rollerblades, and skateboards are prohibited on sidewalks within the downtown district.

Our officers made several educational contacts this week and appreciate the community's cooperation. We hope to continue seeing voluntary compliance as we work together to keep downtown safe and accessible for everyone.

Thank you for helping keep our sidewalks safe!

Over the last two days, KPD and BCSO joint Emergency Services Unit and Drone Teams have conducted multi-agency cross training events with Grand Island Police Department and Hastings Police Department.

Yesterday we joined together at one large scale training event at Greenlief in Hastings. It was a testament of how law enforcement agencies in Nebraska work and train together and serve our communities together.

These are the kinds of skills we hope we never need, but if that day comes, preparation matters.

Thank you Grand Island Police Department and Hastings Police Department - Nebraska and all the staff and personnel at Greenlief for the opportunity to join together as one team of professional of public servants.

We're just glad Officer Epley was able to help put the fire out before our friends at KVFD arrived!

While we appreciate the recruitment effort, we'll be keeping Officer Epley right where he belongs. After all, someone has to be there to call the firefighters when things get really serious. 🚔🔥

In all seriousness, we are grateful for the strong partnership we share with KVFD. Thank you for all you do to keep our community safe, and thank you for letting Officer Epley have his moment in the spotlight!

Please join us in congratulating these eight officers on their selection as Kearney Police Department Police Officers in Charge (POIC)!

The POIC assignment provides supervisory coverage in the absence of a Sergeant and offers valuable leadership experience, training, and professional development opportunities. Investing in leadership at every level is essential to the success of our organization, and this role helps prepare officers to achieve their individual career goals while serving our community.

Congratulations to each of these officers on this accomplishment. Well done!

Our KPD/BCSO internship program is giving our intern a hands-on look at several different areas of law enforcement.
Recently, he had the opportunity to assist with proper evidence disposal procedures under the supervision of law enforcement staff. It is one of many behind-the-scenes responsibilities that help keep evidence rooms organized, secure, and operating properly.
From community events to training opportunities to learning about the work that happens outside of patrol calls, this internship is designed to give participants a realistic look at the many moving parts of law enforcement.
We appreciate his willingness to jump in, learn, and help wherever needed.
