The Texas summer is upon us and it is a necessary to remind everyone that a child or pet should NEVER be left alone in a vehicle unattended.

A few things to remember:

1) The interior of your vehicle is hotter than the temperature outside (see chart below)
2) It is illegal to leave your vehicle running and unattended...and a great way to have your vehicle stolen.
3) It is illegal to leave a child in a vehicle for more than five minutes, regardless of time of year, if:
- The child is under 7, and
- The child is not accompanied by a person 14 years or older
4) We will hold responsible anyone who leaves a child, regardless of age, in a vehicle under circumstances that are dangerous to the child
5) Cracking windows does NOT lower the temperature in the vehicle by more than a few degrees

If you see a child or animal left in a hot vehicle immediately call 911 or (817)556-6060. Our officers will respond and take any action necessary, including forcefully opening windows, to prevent heat related injury

Though this offense did not occur in our city, it offers a reminder that we should all be vigilant in order to avoid becoming a victim of crime. Crime knows no zip code.

Here are some things to keep in mind, both at home and in public:

1) Lock windows & doors...all doors.
2) Be aware of your surroundings and get to know your neighbors
3) Report any suspicious persons or vehicles to police immediately. Pay attention to physical descriptions, makes & models of vehicles and license plates.
4) Consider surveillance cameras or alarm systems. If you do purchase an alarm, opt for one that utilizes a cellular signal instead of a hard-wired land line.

Everything that makes police officers heroes, we first learned from a mother.

Mothers are fiercely protective.
Mothers place the needs of others before their own.
Mothers come running when you are in need.
Mothers are always “on duty.”

Thank you to all of the mothers who are heroes in their own families, and who are setting the example for our future heroes in blue.

Happy Cinco De Mayo!

Not to be confused with Mexican Independence Day (September 16), here is the history behind why it is celebrated.

The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army's victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza. The victory of the smaller Mexican force against a larger French force was a boost to morale for the Mexicans. A year after the battle, a larger French force defeated Zaragoza at the Second Battle of Puebla, and Mexico City soon fell to the invaders.
