The town of Chesterfield has a population of 2,409 and is situated in the northeastern part of the county, south of the city of Plattburgh. Lake Champlain is only a short drive away. Augur Lake is nestled between Poke-O-Moonshine Mountain, which has 1,100-million year-old walls that resemble a gothic cathedral, and the Ausable Chasm, famous for its whitewater deep gorge. This is a peaceful agricul
tural area, as well, with farms that offer organic eggs, dairy and produce. Many natural springs, waterfalls, lakes and streams dot the countryside. Adirondack Park is the largest state park in the U.S., with 6.1 million acres, although more than half of the land is privately owned and includes several villages and hamlets, such as Chesterfield. Outdoor activities abound in the Augur Lake region, including fishing and boating, swimming, hiking, rafting, horseback riding, mountain biking and golf. In the wintertime, nearby Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain, home of the 1980 Winter Olympics, offers skiing, snowboarding, sledding and tubing and ice skating.
