As e-bikes continue to grow in popularity throughout the community, we’ve also seen a rising number of dangerous incidents involving young riders who ignore traffic laws, ride recklessly on our roadways, and, as in this incident captured on Johnson Road, flee from officers.
Parents: enforcement starts at home, and we’re asking for your help to keep your children safe. Please take the time to learn more about what your child is riding, where they are riding, and whether they understand (and are following) the rules of the road. These vehicles can reach significant speeds, and unsafe operations put riders, drivers and pedestrians at risk.
A few key reminders from state law and local regulations passed by City Council in December:
-Texas law requires that Class 3 e-bike riders be at least 15
-Keller city ordinances require helmets for e-bike riders under 16
-While e-bikes are allowed on Keller trails, they cannot travel faster than 15 mph on them
-Keller city ordinances prohibit wearing headphones, earbuds, etc. while operating an e-bike
We also want to be clear: Evading law enforcement in any vehicle — including an e-bike — is not a game. Under Texas law, it can result in a state felony charge.
Here in Keller, the rise in e-bikes has also led to an increase in similar-looking e-motorcycles throughout the community. Please keep in mind that e-motorcycles require a Class M license and registration and cannot travel on sidewalks or trails.
Over the past several months, our officers have focused heavily on education and warnings to bring riders into compliance. Unfortunately, the dangerous behavior continues. Our officers will be taking a firmer enforcement approach going forward.
If you recognize any of the riders in this video, please contact Det. Gentry at [email protected].
