City Council had the opportunity to recognize former Mayor Armin Mizani this week for more than a decade of service to Keller, including six years as mayor.

In appreciation of his leadership and dedication to Keller residents, he was presented with a Key to the City and a collection of community keepsakes, including the gavel he used for nearly 150 meetings.

Throughout his time in office, Mayor Mizani guided investments in parks, trails, roads and public safety while championing initiatives that enhanced quality of life and strengthened Keller’s reputation as Texas’s Most Family-Friendly City.

We’re grateful for his years of service and the time, energy and care he devoted to our community. Thank you, Armin!

Happy Juneteenth!

Fun Fact: Before becoming a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth was declared a Texas state holiday in 1979.

Today marks the 161st anniversary of the day Union troops began enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas more than two years after it was issued.

The oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth is also known as “Jubilee Day,” “Emancipation Day” and “Freedom Day.”

City facilities and garbage/recycling collections are operating normally today, but please be aware that the stormy weather is slowing down CWD’s collections.

Keller residents and businesses will continue to receive trash and recycling services from Community Waste Disposal after the City Council this week authorized city staff to execute a new five-year contract.

The agreement follows a competitive review process that evaluated service levels, customer service performance, operational plans and rates. CWD has served Keller since 2010, and residents expressed strong support for the company and the city’s current solid waste schedule in this year’s community survey.

“As mayor and City Council, we believe it’s important to listen when residents tell us what’s working, and our recent citizen survey results were clear that CWD is meeting — and in many cases exceeding — resident expectations,” Mayor Ross McMullin said. “We appreciate the time and effort all of the bidders invested in this process and look forward to maintaining the exceptional services our residents and businesses deserve.”

Under the new agreement, Keller residents will continue to receive the same services they’ve come to rely upon, including twice-weekly garbage and weekly recycling, yard waste and bulk collection. Residents will also have the option to schedule a cart-cleaning service once per year and will continue to have access to special seasonal leaf collections and door-side collections for household hazardous waste and recyclable electronics.

New to the contract, CWD will provide interested residents with a 95-gallon trash cart at no additional cost. The company will also offer claw/brush truck services to the city for up to 50 hours per year to handle issues such as significant storm debris.

As anticipated, both residential and commercial customers will see a modest rate increase when the new agreement takes effect on Sept. 1, 2026. The residential rate will increase by $2.83, bringing the average customer's monthly solid waste bill to $22.97. Commercial customers should expect a 15.1% increase over their current rates, which vary by container size and collection schedule.

The final contract and related ordinance item are scheduled for approval during the July 7 City Council meeting.

One of our traveling flags recently traded Texas heat for Southern California heat on an adventure with the Russells!

David and Debbie Russell packed a Keller Traveling Flag for their trip to Joshua Tree National Park, where temperatures climbed to a toasty 103 degrees. Their grandchildren, Leah and Harrison, were happy to help show it off as they explored this iconic landscape, where the Mojave and Colorado deserts meet. The visit also marked a milestone for David, who has now checked 46 national parks off his list.

After taking in Joshua Tree’s famous rock formations and namesake trees, the family swapped desert vistas for a little magic with a stop at Disneyland.

Planning an adventure of your own? Bring a little piece of Keller along for the ride! Keller Traveling Flags are available for checkout at the Keller Public Library.

If you've crossed the pedestrian bridge immediately west of the Rufe Snow Drive underpass recently (just south of Bear Creek Parkway), you may have noticed what stands out in this photo: most of the bridge's surface panels have been replaced, but two of the original panels remain.

Crews replaced most of the bridge's surface panels in December. However, two replacement panels arrived late. Now that they've been received and it's hot enough that our trails aren't as busy, the bridge will close on Tuesday, June 16, for these final replacements.

During the closure, trail users will be redirected to nearby sidewalks, allowing them to cross Rufe Snow Drive at the signalized intersection near The Keller Pointe. Thanks for your patience!
