Saturday DUI & Driver License Checkpoint

🚔 Keeping Our Roads Safe in the Clearlake Area

On Saturday, CHP officers in the Clear Lake Area conducted a DUI and Driver License Checkpoint as part of our continued efforts to keep our roadways safe.

These checkpoints are about more than enforcement—they are about preventing crashes, protecting families, and saving lives.

🍺 If you’ve been drinking, don’t drive. Designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, or find another safe way home.

📱 And remember: having a valid driver license and operating your vehicle responsibly are essential to keeping everyone on the road safe.

Make the right choice before you start the engine. Drive sober. Drive licensed. Drive safe.

SOBRIETY AND DRIVER’S LICENSE CHECKPOINT

The California Highway Patrol (CHP), Clear Lake Area, will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) and driver license safety checkpoint on August 15, 2026, at approximately 6:00 PM – 1:00 AM, on State Route 20 west of Government Street.

The goal of the CHP is to ensure the safe passage of each motorist by targeting roads where there is a high frequency of intoxicated or unlicensed drivers. A sobriety/driver license checkpoint is a proven effective tool for achieving this goal and is designed to augment existing patrol operations.

Vehicles will be checked for drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs or driving unlicensed. The objective is to send a clear message to those individuals that consider driving and mixing alcohol or drugs, or driving when unlicensed, that you will be caught, and your vehicle will be towed away.

Funding for this program was provided from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

🚨 CRASH TURNS INTO VEHICLE FIRE 🔥

What begins as a traffic collision can quickly escalate into a far more dangerous situation. Officers arrived on scene and, fortunately, no injuries were reported.

These photos show the aftermath of a crash that resulted in a vehicle catching fire. Once a vehicle becomes engulfed in flames, conditions can deteriorate rapidly, creating serious hazards for motorists, emergency responders, and anyone in the area.

This is another reminder to slow down, stay alert, and give yourself plenty of space to react. If you come upon a crash or emergency scene, move over when safe to do so, reduce your speed, and provide first responders the room they need to work safely.

One moment on the roadway can change everything. Drive safe. Get home. 🚔🔥

🚨 DRINKING AND DRIVING CAN CHANGE LIVES IN AN INSTANT 🚨

Last night’s collision serves as an important reminder of how quickly things can go wrong when alcohol and driving are mixed.

A driver who had been drinking collided with a stationary motorhome. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured, but the damage was significant and the situation could have had a much different
outcome.

🍺 There is no “safe amount” of alcohol when it comes to getting behind the wheel. Alcohol can impair judgment, reaction time, coordination, and decision-making long before a driver realizes they are impaired.

If you’ve been drinking, DO NOT DRIVE. Call a friend, family member, rideshare, taxi, or find another safe way home.

One decision can change everything. Make the right one.

🚫🍺 DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE.

Triple-Digit Temperatures Are Here—Drive Smart, Stay Safe! ☀️

With temperatures reaching 100°F and above across California, the heat doesn’t just affect you—it affects your vehicle too.

Before you hit the road:
🚗 Check your tire pressure. Hot pavement and underinflated tires can increase the risk of a blowout.
🔋 Make sure your battery and cooling system are in good working order.
💧 Stay hydrated and keep extra water in your vehicle for everyone on board.
⛽ Never let your fuel level get too low, especially when traveling through rural areas.
👶 Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle—not even for a minute. Interior temperatures can become deadly in just minutes.
🚨 If your vehicle begins to overheat, safely pull over, turn off the engine, and wait for it to cool before opening the hood.

Whether you’re commuting or heading out for a weekend getaway, a few minutes of preparation can help prevent breakdowns and keep everyone safe.

🚔 Clearlake CHP DUI & Hit-and-Run Arrest 🚔

Last week, officers from the Clearlake Area arrested a driver suspected of driving under the influence following a hit-and-run collision.

Leaving the scene of a crash and choosing to drive while impaired are decisions that place innocent lives at risk. Thankfully, our officers were able to locate the suspect and take them into custody before anyone else was harmed.

The California Highway Patrol is committed to holding impaired drivers accountable and keeping our Lake County communities safe. If you witness a suspected impaired driver or a hit-and-run, safely gather as much information as possible and report it to law enforcement immediately. Your call could help prevent another crash.

Remember: If you drink or use drugs, don’t drive. Plan ahead by designating a sober driver, using a rideshare service, or arranging a safe ride home.

Together, we can make our roadways safer for everyone.

Drive sober. Never leave the scene of a collision. Arrive alive.

✅ Mission accomplished!
We just wrapped up another successful CHP Age Well / Drive Smart class for senior adults this week.

It was great seeing so many participants engage, ask thoughtful questions, and leave with practical tools to stay safer and more confident on the road. Topics covered everything from changing vision and reaction times to medications, vehicle safety features, and smart driving strategies for today’s roads.

A big thank-you to our CHP instructor, Officer Wyatt Gregor.
