🚛🍃 National Secure Your Load Day 🍃🚛

A few extra minutes securing your load can prevent a lifetime of consequences. Loose debris can cause crashes, injuries, and roadway hazards for everyone sharing the road.

Before you drive, check it, cover it, and secure it.

⚠️ SPEEDING + DUI = A DANGEROUS COMBINATION ⚠️

This week, one of our officers stopped a driver traveling well above the posted 55 MPH speed limit. As the investigation continued, it became clear the driver was also under the influence.

Speeding alone reduces your ability to react. Driving under the influence impairs judgment, reaction time, and decision-making. Combined, they create a serious danger for everyone on the roadway.

Let’s keep it simple:
• Never drive after drinking or using impairing substances
• Plan a sober ride before you go out
• Obey posted speed limits
• Give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination safely

No destination is worth risking your life—or someone else’s.

A reminder: Speed limits are there for a reason, and impairment behind the wheel is never acceptable. Make smart choices, slow down, and drive sober.

Memorial Day weekend is about honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

As you travel to spend time with family and friends, make safety part of your plans. Drive sober, slow down, avoid distractions, and always buckle up.

Help make sure everyone makes it home safely this holiday weekend.

The California Highway Patrol has a Holiday Enforcement Period from Friday, May 22nd at 6 pm through Monday, May 25th at 11:59 pm. As part of the national "Click It or Ticket" enforcement campaign, we will be focusing on seat belt and child restraint violations.

Whether traveling on highways or local streets, wearing a seat belt is essential to reaching your destination safely.

In a crash, seat belts can significantly reduce the risk of fatal injury by preventing vehicle occupants from being ejected. Preliminary data from 2024 and 2025 show that over 13,000 crashes statewide involved an unrestrained occupant, resulting in more than 1,300 fatalities, according to the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System.

During last year’s Memorial Day HEP, which covered the same 78-hour period from Friday, May 23, to Monday, May 27, 2025, CHP officers investigated 22 fatal crashes within its jurisdiction. Of the 21 vehicle occupants who died, nine were not wearing seat belts. During that period, CHP officers made more than 1,100 DUI arrests statewide.

Please drive safely this Memorial Day weekend and be sure to wear your seat belt!

A seat belt can be the difference between walking away from a crash and never making it home.

From May 18–31, the California Highway Patrol will participate in the national Click It or Ticket campaign with increased seat belt enforcement. Officers will be stopping drivers and passengers who are not properly buckled up.

Too many lives are lost each year because someone chose not to wear a seat belt. In a crash, being ejected from a vehicle is often deadly, and airbags alone are not enough to protect you.

Buckle up correctly every trip:
✔️ Shoulder belt across your chest
✔️ Lap belt low across your hips
❌ Never behind your back or under your arm

Last Friday, CHP Clear Lake Area personnel had the opportunity to attend this year’s Lake County Peace Officers Memorial Day observance.

Peace Officers Memorial Day honors local, state, and federal officers who have lost their lives or been disabled in the line of duty. Observed each year on May 15, this occasion provides an opportunity to recognize their service, sacrifice, and dedication to protecting our communities.

The California Highway Patrol joins communities across the state and nation in honoring the brave men and women who have served the call. May their service and sacrifice for the people and travelers of California never be forgotten.

A Great day at Riviera Elementary School! 🚲

We Had an awesome time visiting the students today where we talked all about bicycle safety and the important duties of a California Highway Patrol officer. The kids were engaged, asked fantastic questions, and really soaked up the tips on wearing helmets and following traffic rules.

Huge thanks to the teachers and staff at Riviera Elementary for making this possible. Teaching our youngest road users how to be responsible is one of the best parts of the job!
Safety starts early — let’s keep our kids protected!
