Another successful 10-week Citizens' Police Academy is in the books. Last night we celebrated the attendees for their interest and commitment to learn about their local law enforcement agencies. Each week of the academy was packed full of information on various aspects of the criminal justice system. The academy takes a lot of coordination and we are very thankful to all presenters and trainers who helped this year. If you missed this year, be sure to watch for an announcement at the beginning of 2027 when we start taking applications.

Administrative Professionals’ Day is an opportunity every year to recognize and appreciate professionals whose contributions are essential to teamwork and organizational success.

The Kelso Police Records staff exemplify dedication and committed to supporting our commissioned personnel. They are also responsible for all of the behind-the-scenes functions that often go unseen, but all of which are critical to our daily operations.

Our administrative professionals are frequently the first point of contact for members of the public entering our lobby. Beyond their technical and clerical expertise, it is their professionalism, positivity and commitment to excellence that truly sets them apart. Their contributions strengthen our mission and that is felt throughout our entire organization.

Coinciding with this day is National Volunteer Week, which honors the nearly 80 million individuals across the United States who generously donate their time in support of organizations within their communities. We are fortunate to have Judy Nakashima, who has been a consistent and valued volunteer for us since 2015.

Today, we extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation to our records staff Nancy, Angie, Becky, Tracey and Susan, as well as our volunteer Judy, for all they do for our department, our community and for each other. Their individual and collective efforts are essential to our organizational stability.

Today we congratulate Kelso PD recruit Houston Temanson for graduating from the Basic Law Enforcement Academy, class 932.

At the Southwest Washington Regional Academy, there is a special tradition to honor one recruit who stands out for their exceptional attitude, work ethic, and teamwork during Defensive Tactics training: the Jeremy Brown Lion’s Heart Award, named after fallen Clark County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jeremy Brown. Recruit Temanson was awarded this exceptional recognition. Recruit Temanson was highly regarded by the Defensive Tactics cadre as a recruit who excelled in self-improvement by working hard on the mat, having a positive attitude and consistently coming to pre-academy PT and after-hours PT.

Officer Temanson will now join her shift at KPD with a Field Training Officer for continued training, serving the citizens of Kelso.

It is our honor and privilege to recognize our public safety telecommunications partners at Cowlitz 911 during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, April 12th–18th.

Emergency services dispatchers and staff are the true voices behind every 911 call and request for assistance. They are the first point of contact in moments of crisis—often providing calm, steady guidance, critical instructions, compassion, and even life-saving support before first responders can arrive on scene.

While their work is largely unseen by the public, dispatchers serve as the vital link between those in need and those responding to help. They operate under immense pressure, managing critical incidents in real time while simultaneously ensuring first responders receive the essential information needed to act swiftly and effectively.

The level of professionalism, resilience, and dedication required to perform this role cannot be overstated. It is a service that few are truly capable of doing well, and our community is stronger and safer because of their commitment and professionalism.

On behalf of the Kelso Police Department and the community we proudly serve, we extend our sincere gratitude to the dispatchers and telecommunications professionals at Cowlitz 911 this week.

Attached is a recent photo of our highly respected partners at Cowlitz 911.
