The Recreational Boater Information Guy

The Recreational Boater Information Guy The page will provide information to Galveston Bay area boaters regarding port security topics, harb Feedback is always greatly appreciated!!

Since early 2014 I have headed up TMCA’s Community Liaison Committee, a committee set up to maintain a relationship with various boating, conservation, maritime and governmental entities for the purpose of compiling information received from these entities and conveying it back to the boating community. After now having written 23 informative articles for the monthly TMCA newsletter, I no longer h

ead up this committee and am now disseminating continuing articles via both this and other venues. Per my volunteer efforts with the USCG committees described under my signature below, representing the interests of recreational boaters to these various committees is highly rewarding, and it is important to me that some of what I learn as a result of my maritime industry involvement gets dispensed out to the boating community! My dilemma all along has been how to get this information out to the wider boating community, and hopefully this page (I am still a new FB user, so bear with me!) will help toward that goal. And believe me, in our rapidly growing port complex, there are a lot of things that can affect us adversely if none of us are on watch!! For some kinds of information I do have access to certain other venues for getting important items out there. For example, on the Lone Star Harbor Safety Committee (LSHSC) website (www.lonestarhsc.org) I have been able to have created a special section “For the Recreational Boater”. It is under the “Resources” tab and if you scroll down you will see a list of these very important boater documents that everyone should read and become familiar with! If readers have comments, questions, ideas, or information on events that I may not know about, then I would definitely like to hear from you! Philip Kropf

The Sandra G has actually started dredging today in DB, but not out at the #2 as I wrote in my June article. (I'll explain that later.) Her location here is about 0.3nm east of the #4, on the red side. So if you happen to be heading over there anytime soon, stay alert for the dredge and her pipelines.

_________________________________________

UPDATE: So last month my article was greatly shortened due to computer problems. I have recovered from that malady, and the June article is, if anything, probably longer than some other recent ones. But it was a considerable struggle to get through it, and even that effort was after I got enough motivation going to even get started! I frequently sort of purposely create all sort of distractions and excuses to not get started, although when I do get into it, it can even be kind of fun I guess. I especially like looking for appropriate graphics to go with the text.

Some months ago I wrote several times suggesting that I might soon have to call it quits (this after 10+ years of writing these…), or at least write less frequently, or something! My wet AMD is still only in one eye, and I do quite well with distance stuff, but it is that looking at a screen for long periods of time that is a stress. My typing was always two-fingered typing, and I was actually pretty fast, but I guess now some of my depth perception has gone away and I am making way more mistakes just hitting the wrong keys! And it is really slowing me down!!!

But the total amount of time that it is taking every month to write these is the big problem!!! And it is considerable!! There are just some other quite important things which I need, or want, (or think I want), to be doing every month that is the issue, and I just feel that I am kind of running out of time to deal with them all. It is a real dilemma that I am trying to deal with!

And so, you just might not see an article for July, we’ll just have to see how skipping a month might feel. I can still of course, and will, post individual topical items on the RBIG FB page when they come up. Maybe that will be the new format…, we’ll just have to see.

But in the meantime please do enjoy the June article. Here is the list of items which are in it:

¶ 0- a lengthy Introduction on the subject of…, hurricanes!
¶ 1- an awesome video depicting the Great Galveston Storm of 1900.
¶ 2- information on Galveston Bay area dredging projects.
¶ 3- a detailed update on the Double Bayou dredging project.
¶ 4- a notice about the Friday night fireworks over the bay.
¶ 5- news about the Elissa’s pending departure for NYC for the USA’s 250th birthday.
¶ 6- news about The Texas 200 small sailboats regatta.
¶ 7- news about the opening of GBF’s new building.
¶ 8- an alert about vessel documentation ‘scams’.
¶ 9- a map of all hurricane strikes over 173 years.
¶10- information on vessel safety checks.
¶11- news that the Texas Outlaw Challenge has been cancelled for this year.
¶12- information about Summer Sailstice.
¶13- some history about sailors and sauerkraut.
¶14- a repeat of my article from June 2016.
¶15- summer is here history photos from Galveston.
¶16- the usual reminders.
¶17- and closing thoughts for June.

As usual, I hope that you will find the information in this article informative, and useful also, as we now move into probably very hot weather in SE Texas!!!

Past monthly articles, and other items of note in a variety of categories can be found in my main DROPBOX link at: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/eq62ut8uxjfi3gi/AAD5fvah6W0MQ_1Yvs8wLddna?dl=0. Some of the items located there are linked to from within this current article, but all folders and files are available at any time to anyone interested. There is some quite valuable information there, so please take advantage of it!

Please let your boater friends know about this Facebook boater information page and ask them to “follow” it. The information presented therein will hopefully serve to keep Galveston Bay boaters out of trouble out there on our waterways, and also provide other useful information on a variety of topics.

Fair winds to all, and please STAY SAFE, both on the water and off!!!

A safety ALERT for the Galveston harbor area:

VTS Houston-Galveston has been notified of the inaugural outbound transit of the STATE of MAINE from the TX A&M Maritime Academy in Galveston to Sea on Saturday May 23, 2026, from 0900 – 1100. While not an organized event, VTS acknowledges the expected larger than normal increase of recreational traffic in the Galveston Harbor during this transit and the intentions of these recreational vessels to accompany the STATE of MAINE along the outbound transit.

In support of waterway safety;

VTS Houston-Galveston DIRECTS:
1. No vessel movements in the Galveston Harbor Channel from TX A&M to Sea Wolf Park on Saturday May 23, 2026, from 0900 – 1100 other than the STATE of MAINE and those recreational vessels in attendance.
2. Attending vessels are not to proceed within the Federal Channels beyond Galveston Lighted Buoy 1.
3. Upon departure of the Galveston Harbor to Sea, all attending vessels are to remain clear of all Federal Channels marked in red below (Inner Bar Channel, Outer Bar Channel, Galveston Bay Entrance Channel), remaining outside of the Aids to Navigation.

VTS notes the following:
4. Traffic considerations are only in effect for the Galveston Harbor. No attending vessel shall impede the transit of another vessel that is limited in their ability to maneuver due to draft and confined to a Federal Channel (do not cross the bow of any vessel).
5. VTS notes in the submitted Safety Plan that attending vessels are to remain 100 yards from the STATE of MAINE at all times and 200 yards from the stern of the vessel.

A reminder: National Safe Boating Week is coming up from May 16-22. (re: https://safeboatingcampaign.com/ ) There is a lot of good information on this page, and then even more at: https://safeboatingcampaign.com/resources/national-safe-boating-week-toolkit/
including about “Wear Your Life Jacket at Work Day” on May 15.

We encourage all boaters to participate in Wear Your Life Jacket at Work Day on May 15, 2026, the day before National Safe Boating Week. No matter where boaters are safely working, they can join in the fun by wearing their life jacket and posting creative pictures on social media for a chance to win a prize. This is a great way to encourage others to boat responsibly, including following state and local guidance for boating.

Since I personally don’t have to go to work anymore, I won’t be doing this, but maybe some of you will. Send your photos to the “RBIG” and I will certainly post them! 😊 But the rest of the month, and all summer also, please always practice Safe Boating!

And remember, the official start of the 2026 Hurricane Season is just 31 days away!

Always wear a life jacket! For life jacket fit facts visit: https://safeboatingcampaign.com/life-jackets/
