City of Kenai Police Department The City of Kenai is located on the east shore of Cook Inlet at the mouth of the Kenai River, positioned midway between Homer and Anchorage.

Kenai has a population of 7100, expanding during the summer with tourists and an active commercial fishing industry. The community is also a major base for the oilfield service industry. The Kenai Police Department was formed in 1969 with only three officers. Eighteen officers, eight dispatchers and support personnel currently staff it. During summer months, six temporary enforcement officers are hired to accommodate the increase in calls for service. Community programs offered by the KPD include D.A.R.E., Neighborhood Watch, Business Watch and Crime Stoppers. An email scam impersonating the City of Kenai Planning Department is currently targeting applicants and providing instructions for “official payment methods.” The scam email contains key indicators that applicants can note to help identify a potential scam:

The Planning Department does not routinely request payment from applicants by providing instructions to wire funds. Please feel free to call the Planning Department at 907-283-8237 to verify the legitimacy of any request for payment.

The scam was sent from an email ending in .com. Please be advised that the City of Kenai only communicates using official .city email addresses.

If you receive an email like this, please call the Kenai Police Department at 907-283-7879 or forward the email to [email protected] to report the scam.

- Messages creating a sense of urgency (“act now” or “final notice”)
- Links that look suspicious or slightly altered from official websites
- Requests for passwords, banking info, or verification codes

⚠️ What you should do:

- Do NOT click on any links or respond to the message
- Do NOT provide personal or financial information
- Delete the message
- If you’re unsure, contact the organization directly using a trusted phone number or website

If you believe you may have provided information or fallen victim to this scam, contact your financial institution immediately and report it to your local law enforcement agency.
