On Monday, October 5, 2026, the Duplin County Commissioners recognized retiring members of the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office.

Congratulations to Captain Andrew Hanchey and Detective Jeffery Morrison on receiving the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award, and to Pat Wells on receiving a 10-Year Retirement Award.

Thank you all for your years of dedicated service to Duplin County!

Today, Duplin County held the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Duplin County Detention Center.

This new facility represents a significant investment in the safety and security of our community, while providing a modern, secure, and professional environment for our detention staff and those in our custody.

We would like to thank everyone who played a role in making this project a reality — from county leadership and elected officials to the architects, contractors, staff, and community partners who worked together throughout the planning and construction process.

On September 30, 2026, Captain Mitchell of the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office attended the North Carolina Jail Administrators Association Conference, where she had the honor of introducing Pitt County Sheriff Paula Dance as the keynote speaker.
During the conference, she was also presented with a plaque in recognition of her service as President of the North Carolina Jail Administrators Association.

The Duplin County Sheriff’s Office congratulates Captain Mitchell on this recognition and thanks her for her leadership, dedication, and service to the profession.

ARREST MADE FOLLOWING STOLEN TRACTOR INVESTIGATION

On Sunday, October 4, 2026, deputies with the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the area of Cabin Street in Pink Hill, N.C., in reference to a suspicious person.

Deputies received additional information that the suspicious individual appeared to be impaired and was operating a tractor. Deputies quickly responded to the area and located the tractor and its operator, identified as James Colton Taylor, 27, of Mount Olive, N.C.

During the investigation, deputies determined that the tractor Taylor was operating had recently been stolen. Several other items loaded onto the tractor were also confirmed stolen.

While deputies were still investigating the incident, they received a report of an additional breaking/entering and larceny at a nearby farm. Deputies conducted a follow-up investigation and developed sufficient evidence to charge Taylor in connection with that incident as well.

Taylor was arrested and transported to the Duplin County Detention Center, where he was held under a $450,000 secured bond.

James Colton Taylor was charged with:

• (M) Injury to Personal Property
• (M) Injury to Trees/Crops/Land
• 2nd Degree Trespass — 2 counts
• (F) Breaking & Entering — 2 counts
• (F) Larceny After Breaking & Entering — 2 counts
• (F) Possession of Stolen Property — 2 counts
• (F) Larceny of Motor Vehicle — 2 counts
• (F) Possession of Stolen Motor Vehicle — 2 counts
• (F) Habitual Felon — 1 count

On October 1, 2026, at approximately 3:00 A.M., deputies with the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a farm in the Rose Hill area of Duplin County in reference to a breaking and entering. Several items were reported stolen, including a Case tractor.

Later that evening, Duplin County deputies received information regarding a stolen vehicle from Sampson County. The vehicle was equipped with GPS tracking, which indicated its location in a wooded area on Bonham Road near the Sampson-Duplin County line.

Deputies responded to the area and located the vehicle occupied by Eli Jones & Haley Rose. Deputies and detectives with the Duplin County and Sampson County Sheriff’s Offices subsequently located the stolen Case tractor and additional items reported stolen from the farm earlier that morning.

While on scene, detectives also discovered other items that may be connected to additional thefts in the area. This investigation remains ongoing.

Jones and Rose were taken into custody and charged with the following:

* Four counts of Felony Possession of Stolen Property
* Two counts of Felony Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle

The Duplin County Sheriff’s Office anticipates additional charges as the investigation progresses.

This investigation remains active, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

On September 29, 2026, members of the Special Operations Division (SOD) and the Special Response Team (SRT) of the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search warrant on the address of 1115 NC 11 & 903 Hwy, Kenansville, NC 28349 (game room). The search warrant led to seven arrests. 270 grams of methamphetamine and multiple pieces of drug paraphernalia were seized. The drug paraphernalia included digital scales, plastic bags, glass smoking devices, and plastic water bongs. Four kittens were also rescued by Duplin County Animal Control from inside the address.
The following people were arrested and charged:
Elisa Trujillo: A warrant for arrest for 2nd degree trespassing was served. Charged with two counts of trafficking in methamphetamine, pwimsd schedule II, felony possession of schedule II, maintain dwelling, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Elisa Trujillo received a No Bond.
Bradley Wallace Miller: Charged with two counts of trafficking in methamphetamine, pwimsd schedule II, felony possession of schedule II, maintain dwelling, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bradley Miller received a No Bond.
William Sandlin: Charged with two counts of trafficking in methamphetamine, pwimsd schedule II, felony possession of schedule II, maintain dwelling, and possession of drug paraphernalia. William Sandlin received a No Bond.
Shasta Ganss: Charged with two counts of trafficking in methamphetamine, pwimsd schedule II, felony possession of schedule II, maintain dwelling, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Shasta Ganss received a No Bond.
William Allen: Charged with two counts of trafficking in methamphetamine, felony possession of schedule II, simple possession of schedule II, two counts of drug paraphernalia. William Allen received a No Bond.
Dominique Bryant: Charged with two counts of trafficking in methamphetamine, felony possession of schedule II, simple possession of schedule II, two counts of drug paraphernalia. Dominique Bryant received a No Bond.
William Shifflet: Three warrants for two counts of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and felony probation violation were served. Charged with obstruction of justice. William Shifflet received a No Bond.

On September 6, 2026, the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Chinquapin Vol. Fire Department regarding the unauthorized purchase of gasoline using a Department Fleet fueling card. An investigation revealed that a former member of the Fire Department obtained one of the Department’s Fleet fueling credit cards during the month of August and subsequently used the card to purchase more than 240 gallons of gasoline for personal use.
On September 16th 2026, the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office arrested Austin David Jones of Wallace, NC. He is charged with multiple counts of felony- obtaining property by false pretense
