APRIL 19, 2023

In the past several weeks, the Kenilworth Police Department responded to suspicious activity outside of The Joseph Sears School on two occasions. Fortunately, in both cases the school was found to be secure and safe.

With so much tragedy occurring nationwide that directly involves children, schools, and gathering places many of us are understandably sensitive. The Kenilworth Police Department values the strong partnerships we have with Sears School, New Trier High School, and our local preschools. We continually review our protocols to ensure the highest level of response. We are also in regular communication with our neighboring police departments and partner agencies and provide each other with real-time support when incidents do occur.

We all play a role in maintaining a high level of public safety in Kenilworth. Please be reminded of the following safe practices and discuss them with your family members:

· Dial 911 immediately to report any suspicious activity.
· Visit school property only with valid reason and abide by rules meant to keep the school community safe.
· Be aware that toy/replica weapons carried in public areas might be mistaken for real weapons, triggering serious police response. Certain models of toys known as gel guns or water ball blasters very closely resemble real fi****ms and are inappropriate to bring to school or possess on school or village property.
· Secure fi****ms with gun locks or in a gun safe. Contact us for assistance with safe firearm handling and storage or visit Project Child Safe for additional resources.
· Sign-up for emergency communications through the Kenilworth Police Department E-Mail Alerts, the Village’s E-Newsletter and Kenilworth’s Smart911 system.

The Kenilworth Police department is available to answer any questions about safety practices in our community or to dispose of any unwanted weapons. Our non-emergency line is (847) 251-2141.

The Illinois Department of Human Services’ (IDHS) Division of Mental Health, in coordination with the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), is expanding Illinois' mental health safety net by rolling out 988, a new, nationwide su***de prevention and mental health crisis line. It was made available nationally July 16, 2022.

The National Su***de Prevention Lifeline, which has existed since 2005, is now available nationwide via a three-digit dialing code – 988 – making it easier for those in crisis to get the help they need. Converting to this easy-to-remember number offers the public increased access to potentially lifesaving, trained crisis counselors. State and federal funding have made it possible to increase staffing at Illinois’ six existing 988 call centers to ensure that calls are answered in-state.

The coming of the Independence Day holiday is often celebrated with fireworks displays by many communities. Although the purchase of some types of fireworks may be legal in some neighboring states, the fact remains that they are still illegal to use or even possess in Illinois.

Sparks from fireworks can easily start fires which spread quickly and result in tragedy. Sparklers are a legal alternative however, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”), approximately 16% of all consumer fireworks injuries are caused by sparklers burning hands and legs, with the majority of sparkler injuries occurring to young children. According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), “annually just under 10,000 Americans are injured by fireworks”.

The Kenilworth Police investigate all fireworks complaints and in order to promote safety in our community, the Kenilworth Police cite numerous citizens for Possession of Fireworks over the 4th of July holiday and throughout the year.

Please work with us to ensure that the 4th of July holiday is a safe and happy one for all of us.
