SCAM ALERT: FAKE LAW ENFORCEMENT & JURY DUTY WARRANT SCAM
Kenly Police Department warns our community about a scam reported by a local resident. A caller impersonated a Wake County Sheriff’s Office lieutenant...falsely claimed the victim missed jury duty and had a warrant, then demanded $9,500 in cash for bail to avoid getting arrested.
The scammer instructed the victim not to tell anyone, demanded she travel to a non-government location, and even provided a fraudulent arrest warrant to make the threat seem real.
RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR:
Threats of immediate arrest for missing jury duty, Instructions to keep the matter secret, Pressure to travel somewhere or remain on the phone, Demands for cash or sensitive financial information.
PROTECT YOURSELF:
Hang up and verify the claim directly with the agency or court using an official phone number, Never pay someone directly to clear a warrant or avoid arrest (Law Enforcement do not operate like this), Never share financial information with an unverified caller.
If you have paid or shared information, contact your bank and local law enforcement immediately.
Remember: Scammers use fear, urgency, and secrecy to steal your money. Having your name and address does not make their story legitimate.
