Summer Science is at Kennesaw Mountain!

Summer Science is a series of program for young audiences, engaging them in active learning, and encouraging a love of science.

All Summer Science! programs are free but require
pre-registration. To register, please email [email protected] and place "Summer Science" in the subject line.

Make a Fossil, Take a Fossil - June 3
What's a fossil? Young audiences will learn the answer while making their very own fossil impressions to take home with them. Best for ages 5 - 10 years old.

Bird Bingo - June 10
Kennesaw Mountain is important to migratory birds because it is a place for them to rest as they travel north for summer or south for winter. Bird bingo is a fun way to learn about the varieties of birds that call Kennesaw Mountain home year round or just for a few months. Great for kids 5-10 years old.

Make a Cannon, Take a Cannon - July 10
Ever wonder just how a cannon works? A lot more science and math goes into it than you think! The best way to understand this is to make your own. Participants will learn the basic principles of what made real cannons "go" and then apply them to make their own artillery pieces. Best for ages 8-12.

Learning Whether the Weather Can Change History - July 24
What is the weather man talking about? Cumulus and stratosphere? Who knows? We do! These terms and more can have a profound impact on the decisions made during conflict and Kennesaw Mountain is the perfect case study! Young people will learn scientific weather terms and how the weather affected the Battle here. Better for those aged 8 -12 years old.

The Science of Photography - August 5
Photography was a "new" technology during the Civil War, making it the first war to be extensively documented photographically. But just what is photography? This program discusses the history of photography and the science of it - and kids get to make their own cameras! Best for ages 10 - 14 years old.

This isn't completely a Junior Ranger program, but it definitely engages the older youths of our society.

Young adults from 23 states are in Alabama this week to recreate the historic Selma to Montgomery March for Voting Rights. The March, which took place 50 years ago this week, is following in the footsteps of those who dared to walk to ensure all American's rights to vote. Young people, ages 18-25, are experiencing living history, walking, learning, and writing about this historic moment. They, along with over 100 selected public marchers, will share with the world through social media, the power of people united.

Congratulations to our sister National Park Site, Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail on this amazing event!

Budding artists have the chance to have their artwork on display at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Airport officials are helping celebrate the 100th birthday of the National Park Service in 2016 by displaying the artwork created by young people from the three metro national park sites: Martin Luther King, Jr. NHS, Chattahoochee River NRA, and Kennesaw Mountain NBP. Airport officials estimate over a million to 2 million people could see your child's creativity! If you know a budding Matisse or Dali, please let them know about this amazing opportunity.

RULES:

Since children are the future, we are asking if students between the ages of 5 - 18 submit original artwork depicting what Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park means to them. Here are the rules:

Age: 5-18 year old students (kindergarten - high school)

Medium: Please create your artwork with pencil, pen, colored pencil, watercolor, tempera, or marker. You may mix these mediums.

Paper and Size of works: Art needs to be horizontal orientation and the maximum size is 17" by 19".

Theme: "What does Kennesaw Mountain mean to me?"
Students should use their artwork to answer this question. Kennesaw Mountain is a place replete with history and nature and means different things to different people. Be expressive! Be creative! But above all be you.

Artist Statement: With each submission, please include: first name, last name initial (to protect identities), grade level, and the city you live in. You may also include one to two sentences on a separate sheet of paper about your piece and what it represents (optional).
