Atlantic Hurricane season begins June 1, and nobody wants to do last-minute landscaping before a storm! 🌀 Here are some tips to prepare your landscape for hurricane season:

🪚 Regular pruning and maintenance: Removing dead limbs promotes healthy growth.

🌴 Palms: Only remove fronds that are brown and hang from the base of the canopy. A good practice is to picture a clock face across the canopy and only remove fronds that hang below the midline or below the "3 o'clock" and "9 o'clock" positions. Fun Fact: Sabal palms are self-pruning!

🏡 Right tree, right place: Plant large trees away from your home, power lines, or other buildings to reduce the risk of limbs falling on important structures.

🌬️ Choose wind-resistant species: this can include natives such as sabal palms, crape myrtles, live oaks, sea-grapes, and gumbo-limbos.

💚 Plant in groups: this can enhance wind resistance and create a buffer for the plants.

Today is Learn About Composting Day! 🤩

Composting is a great way to limit food and yard waste while also providing nutrient-rich soil for your own yard! 🪴

The EPA recommends combining three ingredients when composting:

🤎 Browns, such as dead leaves, branches, and twigs to provide carbon
💚 Greens, such as grass clippings, fruit and vegetable waste, and coffee grounds to provide nitrogen
💙 Water to maintain a moist environment

♻️ Many cities in Pinellas have their own backyard composting programs! You can find out if your city has them here:

Today is World Otter Day! 🤩

Pinellas County is home to the North American river otter, Lontra canadensis. You may see them in local fresh or brackish water bodies and on banks, chasing and playing or feeding on fish, amphibians, and invertebrates! 🦦

Our local river otters use stormwater conveyance systems to move between bodies of water. River otters are highly vulnerable to pollution and leave contaminated areas. This is one of many reasons why it is so important to follow local stormwater and landscaping ordinances. Not only do our stormwater conveyance systems prevent flooding, they also act as waterways for wildlife! Only rain down the drain! 💦

🎥 These otters were spotted in St. Petersburg!
