Last week, Longwood Fire Company was awarded a grant for CPR equipment. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Mushroom Festival Grant Committee for their generous award and continued support of our organization.

This funding will allow us to update our current CPR equipment to include modern, sophisticated CPR manikins (adult and baby) equipped with enhanced, real-time feedback capabilities. This will help us provide more advanced and effective lifesaving training for our members and the community. We thought it was a good way to honor NAEMT's EMS Week theme, "Improving Outcomes, Together."

Investments like this directly improve the quality of emergency care and preparedness in our region, and we are incredibly grateful for the Committee’s commitment to public safety and community health. Thank you for making this possible!

On Sunday May 10th at 2:51pm Stations 36, 25, 24 and mutual aid were dispatched to a reported outbuilding on fire on Ryan Rd in West Marlborough Township. While units were responding a second call was received reporting a 100’x60’ barn on fire. First arriving units found the barn fully involved with exposures to a second barn in close proximity. Chief 25 arrived and established Command while units from Station 22, 23, 25 and 24 worked to begin extinguishing the fire. A Tanker Task Force was dispatched due to no hydrants in the area, and a fill site was set up at a pond on Upland Rd. Tankers shuttled water to the scene for the duration of the incident.

Shortly after arriving at 3:10pm, Chief 25 was notified of a second House Fire on Unionville Rd in East Marlborough Township. Units from mutual aid departments were dispatched since the Regional units were committed at the first fire. Deputy 25 arrived to find fire showing from the roof with a working attic fire. Engine 37 (Modena) and Ladder 25 arrived and began extinguishment. Engine 22-2 (West Grove) and Squad 36 laid 2100’ of supply line to a fire hydrant at the Landhope Farms Store. The fire was quickly brought under control and additional arriving units assisted with salvage and overhaul.

Crews worked on scene at both fires for several hours completing overhaul operations. Crews returned to quarters just prior to 6pm to begin cleanup of equipment.

Thanks to the mutual aid departments that assisted at both fires and covered the area in case of other emergencies.

🚨 Don't Let the Snow Break Your Heart!

Did you know that in the United States, an average of about 100 deaths per year are linked to snow shoveling — most of them from heart attacks triggered by the cold and physical strain? ❄️❤️

Please make sure in the next day or two as we dig out from the snow:

✅ Take breaks
✅ Go slow and pace yourself
✅ Push snow when possible instead of lifting

✅ Lift with your back and lift what feels manageable

✅ Dress warmly

⚠️ Stop immediately and call 911 for help if you feel chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or unusual fatigue.

On Sunday 1/11 just before 10pm the Department was dispatched for an automatic crash notification in the 1300 block of Lenape Rd in Pocopson. Rescue 25 arrived in the area noticing debris in the roadway and found a vehicle had left the roadway and landed upside down in the Brandywine River almost fully submerged. Rescue 25 requested the water rescue assignment and crews began to develop a plan.

Crews from the Kennett Regional FD and Fame Fire Company donned drysuits and entered the 40 degree water. Crews worked for close to 1 hour in freezing temperatures and cold water to extricate the victim using Hurst eDRAULIC tools, then moving to dry land where the victim was transported by EMS to a local Hospital. Longwood Fire Company’s drone was used with thermal imaging capabilities to check the area for any additional victims.

Our thoughts are with the family of the victim involved in this incident.
