UPDATE – Food benefit emergency allotments: DSHS now has a declaration in place that allows us to apply for emergency allotments past the end of the state emergency. We received approval to provide extra food benefits up to the maximum allotment for December 2022 to households eligible for benefit issuance of at least $1.

If you normally receive your food benefits on Dec. 1 or 2, you will see the emergency allotment amount on your EBT card Dec. 2.

If you normally receive your food benefits on Dec. 3 -20, you will receive the full amount on your regular issuance date.

DSHS will continue to request federal emergency allotments on a month-by-month basis as long as the federal public health emergency is in place.

Learning more about the origins of squash:

Indigenous Peoples brought squash to what is now North America from what is now Central and South America thousands of years ago. It has become an important part of the lives and culture of tribes across the continent.

The recipe below was created by Chef Craig, who is Western Apache and Diné, and is dedicated to raising respect for Indigenous foods. His work helps Indigenous People reconnect to their food and landscape

Interesting Facts about squash:
• The hardened skins of squash can be hollowed out and used as ceremonial decorations and as storage containers.
• Dried squash strips can be used to weave mats.

Need extended food benefits? See the details below.

Correction on dates: We apologize for any inconvenience, and the following now includes correct dates.
Food Benefits Emergency Allotments Update -- October 2022 and Beyond: Good news! DSHS has received federal approval to provide extra food benefits up to the maximum allowed for each household for October 2022. If you normally receive your food benefits Oct. 1-3, you will see the emergency allotment amount on your EBT card Oct. 4. If you normally receive your food benefits Oct. 4-20, you will receive the full amount on your regular issuance date.

DSHS will continue to request future federal emergency allotments on a month-by-month basis and as long as the public health emergency is in place. *At this time, with the ending of the Washington state public health emergency on Oct. 31, 2022, we anticipate November 2022 will be the last month of emergency allotments for food benefits.* Starting in December 2022, these additional emergency benefits will end.

We understand this will have a significant impact on families and we are here to support you during this transition. We encourage you to find local resources, which are listed at findhelp.org and 211.org. Also, if circumstances in your life have changed, you may qualify for a higher food benefit amount. Call 877-501-2233, go to WashingtonConnection.org or visit your local Community Services Office to report changes in household size, income or expenses.
