🚨 SMOKE ALARM HELPS ALERT RESIDENT TO EARLY-MORNING HOUSE FIRE IN RICHLAND

Richland Fire & Emergency Services crews responded to a residential structure fire on Everest Avenue at 3:13 a.m. Friday after flames were spotted behind a dryer in the laundry room.

🚒 Crews arrived five minutes later and quickly extinguished the fire, keeping it contained to the area around the dryer.

Firefighters searched the home to make sure everyone was out and checked the walls and ceiling to ensure the fire hadn't spread.

The fire was under control by 3:26 a.m.

Thankfully, a working smoke alarm alerted the occupant to the danger.

🔥 FIRE SAFETY REMINDERS:
• Clean your dryer's lint filter after every load.
• Regularly remove lint from behind and around your dryer.
• Inspect and clean your dryer vent to prevent lint buildup.
• Never leave a dryer running while you're asleep or away from home.
• Test your smoke alarms monthly and replace alarms when they reach the end of their service life.

🚨 This incident is a reminder that working smoke alarms can save lives, especially when a fire starts while you're sleeping.

Last night in Richland, a dryer fire forced a whole apartment building to evacuate. Thankfully, everyone made it out safe. Dryer fires are the most preventable fires we respond to as a community: clean the lint trap every load, and have the vent line professionally cleaned about once a year — the trap only catches some of it. Fall loads are heavier. Is your dryer keeping up?

Sweaters, blankets, and flannel sheets shed more lint than summer clothes. Some of that lint slips past the trap and builds up inside the dryer cabinet, near the heating element and motor. This week is Fire Prevention Week. It's a great time to check the one appliance most people forget about - the dryer.
Lint is highly flammable, and it doesn't just collect in the lint trap. It builds up inside the vent and the dryer itself, where you can't see it. Clean the lint trap after every load, keep the area around your dryer clear, and never run it while you're asleep or away from home. And at least once a year, have the full vent system cleaned.
