Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he navigates the difficult days ahead.

We are collecting donations to help him with immediate needs. Clothing sizes are:

Please slow down while traveling the highway corridor from Mile 128 - 133 on the Glenn Hwy. Firefighters and equipment may be on or near the road.

June 22 Update, Nelchina Glacier Fire:
Location: 4 miles southeast of Eureka Roadhouse, mile marker 128 Glenn Highway, Alaska
Start Date: 06/19/25
Cause: Lightning Size: 750 acres;
Completion/Containment: 0%
20 Total Personnel: 3 Engines; 2 Helicopters

Fire activity on the 750-acre Nelchina Glacier Fire ( #226), 4 miles south of Eureka Roadhouse on the Glenn Highway, continues to be active along the northern perimeter and smoke continues to be
visible to the public along the Glenn Highway. The fire activity along the southern and eastern sides has been
reduced because of the fire’s proximity to the Nelchina River and Eureka Creek drainages and the cooler
temperatures and moisture laden fuels associated with those drainages.
Today, fire crews will begin installing pumps and hose lays around structures that are south of Eureka Roadhouse,
between the fire’s northern perimeter and the Glenn Highway. This portion of the fire still continues to be very
active during the day. In addition to hose lays around structures, fire managers will also begin directing masticators
to remove vegetation north of the fire area that could be impacted if the fire activity increases and begins moving
to the north towards the Eureka Roadhouse. A masticator is a type of heavy machinery used in forestry or land
clearing. It has a rotating drum with sharp teeth or blades and is used to shred, grind, or "masticate" vegetation
which helps reduce wildfire risks by managing fuel loads.
An Alaska National Guard Blackhawk helicopter will continue to support suppression efforts with water drops along
the northern portion of the fire with it’s 700-gallon bucket, cooling the perimeter of the fire to minimize the fire’s
movement towards the north which could potentially impact the Glenn Highway corridor. Engines crews will still be
visible along the Glenn Highway between mile markers 120 and 136 as they monitor the fire activity and take
advantage of geographical and natural barriers to keep the fire within its current footprint and protect values at
risk. A Wyoming based fire module will also support the firefighting efforts on the ground as they continue to
monitor the fire’s behavior and current activity within the limited access fire.
The public is encouraged to slow down and stay vigilant when traveling along the Glenn Highway near the Eureka
Roadhouse, mile marker 128, as fire crews, masticators and aviation assets will be visible in that area as they
continue to work on suppressing the fire while providing for public safety.

Burn permits are suspended. No debris burning, burn barrels, or lawn burning is allowed. Please note that cooking and warming type fires are still allowed but extreme caution must be used due to the wildfire potential should an ember escape or a fire be left unattended or not completely put out. Additionally, a red flag warning is in effect for the Copper River basin for today, Saturday, June 21 for hot dry and windy conditions. This means any fire start could lead to rapid growth.

Burn permits in the Kenai-Kodiak, Mat-Su and Copper River Prevention Areas will be suspended beginning Saturday, June 21, because of an increase in fire activity in Interior Alaska and limited fire resources from across the state to respond to escaped fires. The suspension will remain in place until fire activity is reduced, and resources become more readily available. With multiple fires across the Alaskan landscape, fire managers from across the state are prioritizing fires and shifting resources from one location to another across the state to provide the most rapid response to new and existing fires. Fire resources stationed in the Kenai, Mat-Su and Copper River response areas have been mobilized to the Interior of Alaska to assist with new initial attack fires and rapid rates of spread brought on by unseasonably warm temperatures, receptive fuels and an abundance of lightning associated with our current weather pattern.
Burning of debris piles, lawns, or utilizing a burn barrel is prohibited.

The Copper River Basin is currently experiencing high winds! Burning not recommended!

High winds expected! 💨 Burning is not recommended, per instructions on the burn permit, which advises against burning in adverse weather to include hot, dry, or windy conditions. Gusts of 30 mph are forecasted in parts of the Copper River Basin through Friday, May 30th. Please ensure your localized conditions are not receiving sustained or high wind gusts before undertaking a debris burn or igniting a burn barrel. Care must be taken with any flame source such as a recreational fire or even a BBQ grill. Never leave your burn unattended and make sure it is completely out when finished! Please help keep your home, neighborhood and community safe by following safe burning practices. Remember, you are responsible for every fire you start! For questions, call 822-8665 and leave your contact information.
