WalkinInMyShoes

WalkinInMyShoes Jo Wims Founder and CEO would walk the streets and go into areas where they congregate and provide a listening ear and a hand of compassion.

We provide a safe haven to protect teens who runaway, have deceased parents, aged out of the foster care system and adopted homes, faced domestic violence, experience mental illness, LGBTQ, juvenile ex-offenders, parenting teens and much more! During this she identified three very pressing needs that were not being met by other community organizations:

1. The number of young people and women wit

h children living on the streets that were turned away or placed on waiting lists because shelters were at capacity.
2. The need for housing assistance for the homeless population.
3. The lack of information and access to prevention services for those persons living on the street. To prevent the risk of sexual exploitation of these young people, men and women with their children, a new agency emerged to provide them with services that help them leave the streets. Walkin’ In My Shoes established the Street Outreach Program to provide information about prevention services that will link the homeless with immediate emergency shelter assistance and to secure adequate placement within 24 hours. This was done in an effort to reduce the number of homeless youth, women and children on the streets of Kenosha who were at risk of being, sexually abused, exploited or commit crimes to try to meet their basic needs.

Did you know we have programs too?

IDA’S HOUSE assists the youth of all ages (who are in need of immediate care). Once we make the first point of contact we connect them with emergency shelter and housing designated in our community, who would assist them with a safe place to stay. The services we offer help youth get back into high school, attend college, obtain clothing, ID’s, birth certificates and other documents needed to obtain employment.

Our drop-in center provides a safe haven for youth. To avoid youth just hanging out in the parks, bus depot, and other nonconventional places, with nowhere else to go, we give them a place to come. Our drop-in center, gives youths access to a computer, get them registered for health care benefits, school, employment, transportation, clothing, personal care items, permanent housing referrals and one on one Life coaching.

"Le***an, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth who are homeless must face these challenges [typical to homeless youth] on top of social stigma, discrimination, and frequently rejection by their families. The failure of critical family and social safety nets to support these youth has catastrophic consequences on their economic stability, educational attainment … economic future, and life expectancy."

“No vision haunts America’s conscience more than the sight of the street people… The irrationality and anguish that grip so many of these individuals leap out during any encounter, whether in Washington or Albuquerque.” —Senator Pete Domenici

Facts like this are always scary to us, we have to keep working on this project, we have the responsibility as Americans to take care of our neighbors.
