Safety First

The Kenova Police Department has received multiple concerns regarding juveniles operating electric scooters and electric bikes throughout the city. The primary issues being reported are excessive speed, failure to stop at intersections, and a general lack of awareness when entering roadways.

While we want our children to be able to play and enjoy themselves, it is equally important that they do so safely and follow basic traffic laws. These devices can reach high speeds and can quickly enter the path of moving vehicles, creating a serious safety risk for both the operator and drivers.

We are asking parents and guardians to speak with their children about roadway safety, proper use of these devices, and the importance of obeying traffic laws. These devices are required to stop for all traffic control devices. They must also travel on the right side of the street. Everyone under the age of sixteen should be wearing a helmet and protective gear.

We already have reports of head injures, foot injuries, and a broken leg.

Please help us share this message. Numerous citizens and first responders have expressed serious concerns about how quickly these devices can maneuver into traffic, often without warning or proper awareness.

Our goal is education and prevention before a more serious incident occurs. Be safe!

ATTENTION DRIVERS - TRAFFIC CHANGES ON 14TH STREET

Phase 1 of the long-awaited repairs to the 14th Street (Route 75) viaduct will begin on April 27. The contractor estimates the work will last two weeks. Obviously, the work schedule is dependent on the weather, but City Hall is hoping the project will be completed by May 8.

Traffic will be restricted to one lane between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. There will be times the flow of traffic will be stopped completely for equipment movement.

Local motorists are urged to use alternate routes and exercise caution in the areas between Chestnut Street and Maple Street during these times. We appreciate your patience.

Graduation Day!

The Kenova Police Department proudly congratulates Captain Anthony Thompson on graduating from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, as a member of Class 297.

Internationally recognized for its elite law enforcement training, the FBI National Academy is a comprehensive 10-week residential program offering advanced leadership, communication, and high-intensity physical fitness training. Participants are selected based on proven professionalism and leadership within their agencies. Even more remarkable, fewer than 1% of law enforcement officers worldwide are chosen to attend.

The program brings together law enforcement leaders from across the United States and around the world to strengthen law enforcement standards, knowledge, and cooperation. The three core components of the program are academics, physical fitness, and networking with fellow law enforcement leaders.

Instruction is provided by FBI Academy instructors, special agents, and subject-matter experts with advanced degrees who are recognized leaders in their fields.

Captain Thompson is the first officer in Kenova Police Department history to attend and graduate from the FBI National Academy. During the program, he also had the opportunity to represent the State of West Virginia and the City of Kenova at the national level.
The Kenova Police Department is proud of his continued dedication to our community and public safety and we welcome him back for duty next week.

Our pride in his accomplishment cannot be overstated!
