We commend the following linked opinion piece by Dr. Carmen Chiappetta in Word on Fire Catholic Ministries on the responsibility of Catholic schools and Catholic leaders to educate students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and we thank the author for mentioning CCSE along with other programs across the country.

The article notes "we need documents ... to explicitly state that educating students with disabilities in our Catholic schools is not something to be added on later, when the school is ready, but is fundamental to the mission of Catholic education. ...

"Catholic education must place all human persons, including those who are vulnerable or learn differently, at the center. It must consider these students’ needs in their instructional design, and it must do this as primary responsibility, not as an afterthought."

The Front Royal statement failed to state that educating students with disabilities is fundamental to the mission of Catholic education.
