We at the Kensington Police Department are happy to see so many kids and families outside enjoying the fresh air, riding bicycles and e-bikes throughout our community. Getting outdoors, staying active, and enjoying time with friends is something we fully support.
With that said, we have recently received numerous complaints regarding unsafe operation of bicycles and e-bikes on roadways, and in parking areas. We would like to remind everyone that bicycles and e-bikes are subject to the rules of the road, just like motor vehicles. Riders must obey stop signs and traffic lights, ride in the proper direction of travel, yield when required, and operate responsibly and courteously around pedestrians and vehicles.
Under New Hampshire law, e-bikes are classified into three categories/ classes:
Class 1
• Electric motor less than 750 watts
• Pedal assistance up to 20 mph
• (no motor assist over 20 mph)
• No throttle
Class 2
• Electric motor less than 750 watts
• Pedal assistance and non-pedaling propulsion up to 20 mph
• (no motor assist over 20 mph)
• Has a throttle
Class 3
• Electric motor less than 750 watts
• Pedal assistance up to 28 mph
• (no motor assist over 28 mph)
• No throttle
• Cannot be operated by a person less than 16 years of age
• Must be equipped with a speedometer
• Prohibited from most rail trails
A class 1 and class 2 electric bicycle may be ridden on bicycle paths or on multi-use paths where bicycles are permitted (unless specifically prohibited.)
A class 3 electric bicycle shall not be ridden on a bicycle or multi-use path unless it is within or adjacent to a highway or roadway, or unless a city, town, or state agency having jurisdiction of the path permits the operation of class 3 electric bicycles on that path.
New Hampshire defines an e-bike as a bicycle equipped with an electric motor of less than 750 watts. E-bike riders are expected to follow the same roadway laws and safety practices as traditional bicycles.
We encourage parents to speak with their children about safe riding habits, helmet use, and being respectful of others using our roads, trails and parking lots. Working together helps keep everyone safe while still allowing kids to enjoy being outdoors.
Thank you for your cooperation and continued support.
