Saving lives is our mission. Saving taxpayers millions is an added benefit.

In 2025, KVFD volunteers contributed 46,674 hours of service. That's the equivalent of 22 full-time employees and an estimated $3.4 million in savings for Montgomery County residents.

While our members volunteer their time, emergency response is never free. Donations help fund the apparatus, equipment, training, and resources needed to protect our community.

What keeps a volunteer fire department running besides emergency calls? 🚨

Behind the scenes, KVFD relies on dedicated administrative volunteers who support fundraising efforts, community outreach, events, communications, and day-to-day operations that help keep the department moving forward.

Not every volunteer role involves emergency response, but every role makes an impact on the Kensington community.

🚨 Warning: Volunteering may completely change your life.

What starts as trying something new can quickly turn into finding a team, a purpose, and a role in something bigger than yourself.

KVFD members serve the Kensington community while gaining hands-on training, new skills, and experiences that last far beyond the station doors.

Trade the cap and gown for a helmet and turn-out gear. 🎓🚒

Graduation marks the start of a new chapter and for some, that chapter includes serving their community.

KVFD volunteer firefighters respond to real emergency calls while gaining valuable leadership, teamwork, and hands-on experience along the way. Free training is provided, and flexible scheduling can make it possible to volunteer while balancing school, work, or a career.

The Kensington Volunteer Fire Department is proud to announce that our membership has voted to endorse Corey Smedley for 2nd Vice President of the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

For more than a century, KVFD has been built on a tradition of service, leadership, and dedication to protecting our community. We believe strong leadership is essential to moving the fire service forward while honoring the traditions and values that have shaped our profession.

Chief Smedley represents those values through his commitment to firefighter safety, leadership development, and advocacy for both volunteer and career departments. As the leader of one of the nation’s most complex combined fire and rescue systems, he understands the challenges facing today’s fire service and the importance of collaboration at every level.

We are proud to support a leader from our own county as he works to help guide the future of the fire and rescue service nationwide.
