THANK YOU TO OUR KPD EVIDENCE UNIT

Kent PD’s evidence unit is busy. The personnel who carefully package, log and store Kent’s evidence for hundreds of cases are usually the unsung heroes of any department. But not today.

Today, we want to shine a spotlight on the meticulous professionals who work behind the scenes to keep our community safe and ensure justice is served. Behind every solved case, every fair trial, and every just verdict stands KPD’s Evidence Unit.

The Evidence Unit preserves the integrity of every single item collected. Without their strict adherence to the chain of custody, the most vital pieces of a case could be ruled inadmissible in court.

They speak on behalf of the physical facts of a crime. While witnesses can forget or disappear, physical evidence does not lie. Our team meticulously organizes, logs, and protects everything from DNA swabs to digital forensics. Their precision gives prosecutors the solid facts needed to convict the guilty and exonerate the innocent.

They help to bring closure to victims and turn an investigation into a successful prosecution. Their hard work ensures that victims and their families get the answers and accountability they deserve.

In 2025 they took in 7,243 new pieces of evidence. This is in addition to evidence that has been stored in previous years for cases that are unsolved, pending trial or still in the appeal window.

They don’t just manage evidence. They assisted in building the property section of our Records Management System so that it complies with all necessary legal requirements. They recently opened a new evidence area on our east hill to assist officers who work in that area. This new location means a shorter trip to drop off evidence and more time in their district.

They manage our police auctions, get evidence ready for transport and trial, and are the subject matter experts for officers seeking evidence related information.

To our Evidence Unit: Thank you for your tireless dedication, your unmatched organization, and your commitment to the highest standards of justice. You are a crucial investigative unit in our department, and we are incredibly proud of the vital work you do every day.

Please join us in thanking our Evidence Unit.

TEEN DRIVER SAFETY

This week is National Teen Driver Safety Week. We love our teen drivers and want to help keep them safe.

Kent PD Traffic Officers Axelson and Morrison have a few tips to share.

While teens are in the early stages of their driving careers, they are building a repertoire of intuitive skills they will need to handle any situation. During this time, they are particularly vulnerable to accidents. The crash rate for 16–17-year-old drivers is 3 times higher per mile driven that for drivers 20 and older. 75% of serious teen driver crashes are due to "critical errors," such as going too fast for road conditions, lack of scanning, or distraction, (cell phone, friends etc.).

We have listed a few helpful sites below that specifically address teen drivers and give you some ideas and materials to help you connect with them on this topic. Take a few minutes, peruse the sites, and set a time to sit down with your teen to share the info. Don’t wait. Yeah, we know, it probably won’t make you popular, and they will possibly give you a hard time.

Your conversation might save their life though….so worth it.

PATROL OFFICERS AND DRONE CATCH DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SUSPECT

Early Saturday morning around 12:50 a.m. Kent Patrol Officers responded to a report of a domestic violence assault in progress. The victim, a woman in her 20s, called 911 to report that her husband, also in his 20s, had kicked her in the abdomen. The woman is in the late stages of pregnancy. 911 call receivers could hear a male voice in the background of the call, and then it went silent.

911 called back into the home, and the victim stated that her husband was next to her. Multiple Patrol Officers headed to the location; as they were enroute, they sent a drone ahead to get eyes on the house.

It is not unusual for domestic violence suspects to flee once they know 911 has been called. The drone arrived ahead of the officers and saw the suspect walking away from the backside of the house, and into a nearby tree line.

Officers Flowers arrived, and using the updated location info from the drone operator, Kent Officer Bertolacci, he found the suspect attempting to hide in the trees. The suspect was initially uncooperative but was taken into custody as additional officers arrived to assist.

The victim stated that her husband came home intoxicated and became angry over something minor. She was experiencing pain and after being evaluated by Puget Sound Fire, was taken to local hospital to ensure everything with the pregnancy was ok.

It is not unusual for a pregnancy to cause stress in a relationship. It is unusual for that stress to result in kicking the pregnant spouse. If this is you, please reach out for help.

If you are being abused in your household, CALL 911

If you are currently safe and want to report previous assaults, call the non-emergency Kent Dispatch line 253-852-2121

SHOPLIFTING WHEN POLICE CARS ARE PARKED OUT FRONT?

Wednesday evening Patrol Officers Wall and Long were parked in the Target lot after handling a shoplift call, when a loss prevention employee came running out the front doors. She yelled that another shoplifter had just exited out of the East emergency exit with a cart full of items.

Both Officers immediately took off running, and located the suspect, a 53-year-old woman, attempting to flee across 104th Ave. They gave her commands to stop, she declined, ditched the cart and tried unsuccessfully to hide in the bushes. She was taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect had stolen 21 items, totaling $752.64. She admitted that her intent was to sell some of the items.

We don’ t know why the suspect picked this store and this time to try and heist a cart completely full of items. Target is known for having attentive loss prevention employees, and they call 911 when they catch people stealing. One might assume that presence of two police cars might have also caused a pause.

Great job by Officer Wall and Long sprinting across the street to catch this shoplifter, and to loss prevention for their eagle eyes and quick responses.
