Tons of healthy, fresh food is thrown into landfills in the Bay Area, CA, creating an enormous environmental problem. Yet thousands of residents worry about where their next meal is coming from. There is enough healthy food for all of us in our community, but there has been a critical, missing link between those who have it and those who need it. ExtraFood rescues excess food from any Bay Area bus

iness, school and backyard – and immediately delivers it to nonprofit partners serving our community’s most vulnerable children, seniors and families, 365 days a year and free of charge. And ExtraFood’s Community Meals program uses the excess capacity of restaurants and caterers to give freshly-made meals to people in need. Together, we can bring the day when all in our community have the food they need.

Happy World Bicycle Day! 🚲

This bike-powered food rescue is proof that small wheels can make a big impact.

Our volunteer David G. transported a trailer full of fresh food from Safeway on 7th in San Francisco to Chinatown Community Center showing that sustainable transportation and food recovery can go hand in hand.

Whether by car, truck, or bike, each rescue helps reduce food waste, lower emissions, and deliver nutritious food to neighbors who need it most.

It’s Selfie Sunday for Scott!

Thank you for ensuring this delicious food from Mollie Stone's Markets in Greenbrae went to feed the wonderful people at Lifehouse, Inc. instead of ending up in a landfill.

Every rescue helps turn surplus food into meals, connection, and community support, and volunteers like Scott make it happen.

Feed More. Waste Less. That’s what we do.

One of the best parts of Saturday food rescues to Haight Ashbury Food Program is the warm welcome from the incredible volunteers ready to receive, sort, and distribute food throughout the community. 💚

Since 1983, HAFP has operated on the belief that freedom from hunger should be a human right, not a privilege. Rain or shine, a dedicated team of 40–50 volunteers of every generation shows up each week to help feed their neighbors—some of them have been volunteering for over 10 years.

HAFP distributes staple produce to approximately 225 people each week, and ExtraFood donations help expand the variety and quality of groceries available.

“ExtraFood donations really make a difference. The difference of going home with between 1-2 meals, to now 3-4 meals, it really does help” says Robert the Pantry Manager.

Thanks to donations from Whole Foods, Bob’s Donuts, Trader Joe’s, and more, pantry visitors are able to access additional proteins, deli items, bakery goods, and prepared foods.

We’re so grateful to HAFP for being such an incredible longtime partner and for ensuring recovered food reaches the community instead of going to waste.

Some food deliveries bring more than just groceries. 💚

This food rescue from Gus's Market to Frandelja Enrichment Center included fresh produce, prepared foods, and even flowers to brighten their day a little more.

This amazing daycare organization was established to meet the needs of children and families residing in the Bayview Hunters Point Community. We are incredibly proud to partner with them to provide food to people struggling with food insecurity.

Good food has a way of bringing people together, and we’re grateful to everyone who helps make these deliveries possible.

Eileen, who handles our weekend operations in San Francisco, recently spent a few hours with Mary Risley, founder of Food Runners, which she launched 30 years ago and later helped merge with ExtraFood three years ago as she stepped into retirement. As an ongoing consultant to ExtraFood, Mary remains closely connected to the organization’s work, and their conversation reflected how it continues to carry forward her legacy of rescuing food, feeding those in need, and building community while growing its impact. Her message is simple. She said donate food, volunteer your time, or, if neither is possible, consider a financial contribution. For those who have given before, continued support makes a meaningful difference. Thank you, Mary for all that you have done for our community!

When we had a shortage of volunteers signing up for rescues out to Victory Village, a senior living community in Fairfax, resident Jocelyn and her caretaker, Allan, signed up to become ExtraFood volunteers. But soon, Jocelyn and Allan became some of our most active volunteers rescuing huge grocery donations for recipients all across Marin.

Having lived an adventurous life of flying helicopters through the Grand Canyon and climbing mountains (including Everest), Jocelyn was used to being an active individual. With a back injury that left her bedbound for 5 years, Jocelyn is happy to be walking again and with Allan at her side feels like she is making up for those inactive years, completing over 100 trips rescuing 24,000+lbs.

To Jocelyn, food rescue has become getting out of the house regularly, helping the community, and doing physical exercise. Allan does the driving and the heavy lifting while Jocelyn will fill donation boxes and do most of the sorting.

The team’s favorite rescue remains the huge Sunday Sprouts Market donation to Victory Village. “There’s not a lot of activities for seniors to do, so this delivery is a community event. We have a whole team of volunteers that have stepped up to help and they all look forward to Sundays, they enjoy it” says Jocelyn. The Victory Village volunteers look out for their own, making sure everyone receives food, even those who are not mobile enough to attend the pantry.

We love to see the different ways that food adds value and community to our volunteer and recipient’s lives. Thank you Jocelyn and Allan for all your dedication and hard work!

Not a bad view for a backyard harvest!
Thank you to Tony for donating your lemons and to volunteer Christine for leading this harvest. We appreciate you and your team's efforts to ensure these delicious lemons didn't go to waste.
We pick up and/or harvest surplus backyard and farm produce then distribute it to food pantries, kitchens serving people facing hunger, and more.
