Today, on May 4, International Firefighters’ Day, we recognise those who continue to serve.

Firefighters who stand ready—
between danger and the community.

Their courage, commitment, and quiet strength protect us all.

To those serving today, in every part of the world—thank you.

International Firefighters' Day:
A day to pause.
A day to reflect.
A day to honour.

Wherever you are, you are part of this shared moment.

From the Office of the Kentland Fire Chief

With the potential for extended power outages in our area, I want to remind everyone of a few critical safety precautions. These situations can quickly become dangerous if the proper steps aren’t followed.

⚠️ Generator Safety

* NEVER run generators inside homes, garages, or near doors and windows.
* Place generators at least 20 feet away from structures, with exhaust directed away.
* Ensure you have working carbon monoxide detectors in your home.

🕯️ Candle Safety

* Use flashlights or battery-powered lighting whenever possible.
* If candles are used, keep them away from anything that can burn.
* Never leave candles unattended or burning while you sleep.
* Keep out of reach of children and pets.

🔥 Gas Oven & Stove Safety

* DO NOT use your oven or stove to heat your home.
* This creates a serious carbon monoxide hazard.
* Only use appliances as intended.

🤝 Check on Your Neighbors

* Please take a few minutes to check on elderly neighbors or those who may need assistance.
* A quick check-in can make a big difference during extended outages.

🚨 Final Reminder
These outages create additional risks—please use caution and good judgment. If you experience an emergency, call 911 immediately.

If you have a medical necessity that requires power please contact Newton county dispatch at 219-474-5661 and they will contact us so we can try to assist you.

We appreciate your cooperation and ask everyone to look out for one another.

Tonight is a tough reminder of how quickly conditions can change.

Kentland Fire was dispatched to a structure fire on 350 just north of town, but due to multiple power lines down from straight-line winds, access to the scene was extremely limited. Situations like this create serious hazards not only for responders, but for the public as well.

We want to make everyone aware that there are numerous power lines down outside of town, mainly along US 24 and 350 north of Kentland. Please stay clear of any downed lines and avoid unnecessary travel in those areas. Power is currently out in Kentland and nearby communities, and at this time we do not have an estimate on when it will be restored.

The structure involved was a barn, and fortunately it was located far enough from the residence that no damage occurred to the home.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as crews continue to work through these dangerous conditions. Stay safe.

Tonight, the Kentland Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the Goodtable Family Restaurant. The fire originated in the kitchen while the business was open. All employees and customers were able to exit the building safely. Upon our arrival, the fire had begun to pe*****te the roof.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all of the departments and agencies that assisted us in battling this fire.

We greatly appreciate the support from Goodland Fire, Brook Fire (IN), and Sheldon, Concord, Milford, Donovan, and Stockland Fire (IL). Thank you as well to Newton County Ambulance, Newton County Dispatch, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, and Kentland Police Department for your assistance and coordination on scene.

Despite a tremendous team effort, the fire unfortunately destroyed more than 50% of the structure. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the owners and employees of this great establishment during this difficult time.

We are grateful for the teamwork and dedication shown by everyone involved.

Public Notice – Please Avoid the Area

This evening, the Kentland Fire Department assisted the Lake Township Fire Department after their area sustained a direct hit from a tornado.

There is significant damage throughout the area, and multiple emergency agencies are currently on scene working to assess damage, check residences, and assist those affected.

For your safety and to allow emergency personnel to work, please avoid the area until further notice. Unnecessary traffic can delay emergency response and create additional hazards.

Our thoughts are with the residents and responders dealing with the aftermath of this storm. We appreciate the public’s cooperation as crews continue working.

Merry Christmas from all of us at the KFD!
