β˜€οΈπŸš” Kentwood Police Department Reminds Drivers: Look Before You Lock πŸš”β˜€οΈ

As temperatures continue to rise, the Kentwood Police Department would like to remind everyone of the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles. Even on a relatively mild day, the temperature inside a parked vehicle can increase rapidly and become life-threatening within minutes.

πŸš— Never leave a child alone in a vehicle, even for a short period of time. A quick errand or brief stop can quickly turn into an emergency.

Help Prevent Hot Car Tragedies:

βœ… Place a purse, wallet, phone, or another essential item in the back seat so you are reminded to check before locking your vehicle.

βœ… Keep a stuffed animal in your child's car seat and move it to the front seat when your child is riding with you as a visual reminder.

βœ… Make it a habit to check the back seat every time you exit your vehicle.

βœ… Always lock your vehicle when parked to prevent children from entering on their own.

If You See a Child Alone in a Vehicle:

πŸ“ž Call 911 immediately if the child appears to be in distress or in danger.

πŸ“ Stay near the vehicle and provide dispatchers with as much information as possible until help arrives.

As we head into the warmer months, we encourage everyone to remain vigilant and help keep our youngest community members safe. A simple check of the back seat could save a life.

πŸš› Truck Route Enforcement Reminder

The Kentwood Police Department Traffic Unit has received multiple citizen complaints regarding commercial vehicles traveling on roads posted as "No Trucks" within the city.

To address these concerns and improve roadway safety, the Traffic Unit will be conducting targeted enforcement with a zero-tolerance approach for truck route violations. Commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds that are using non-truck-route roads to bypass designated truck routes may be stopped and subject to enforcement action.

Please review the attached map of designated truck routes and roads where truck traffic is restricted. Drivers are encouraged to pay close attention to posted signage and plan their routes accordingly before traveling through the city.

Please note that exemptions do exist and may include, but are not limited to:
βœ… Local deliveries
βœ… Postal service and delivery vehicles
βœ… Utility and construction vehicles

For additional information, please refer to Kentwood City Ordinance Sections 66-91 through 66-96 and MCL 257.726.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping keep Kentwood's roadways safe for everyone.

As temperatures continue to warm up and more motorcycles return to our roadways, the Kentwood Police Department reminds all drivers to stay alert: Look Twice. Save a Life.

Motorcycles are smaller and can be harder to see, especially at intersections and when changing lanes. Many crashes happen simply because a driver didn’t see a motorcycle in time to react.

Please take an extra moment to:
β€’ Check your blind spots
β€’ Look twice before turning or pulling out
β€’ Give motorcycles plenty of space
β€’ Stay focused and avoid distractions while driving

Let’s all do our part to keep our roads safe this season. A few extra seconds of awareness can prevent a tragedy.

Look twice β€” it could save a life.

Kentwood Police Arrest Suspect in Connection with Two Separate Attacks

The Kentwood Police Department has arrested and charged a suspect in connection with two separate incidents that occurred on May 12, 2026.

Assault Investigation (Case #26-10189)

On May 13, 2026, at approximately 2:10 p.m., officers responded to a report of an assault that had occurred the previous day on Poinsettia Ave. SE. A 66-year-old female reported that while working in her yard between 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on May 12, 2026, a male suspect stopped his vehicle, engaged her in conversation, made unwanted advances, and physically assaulted her.

Attempted Kidnapping Investigation (Case #26-10150)

On May 12, 2026, at approximately 6:40 p.m., officers responded to the 1800 block of Rondo Street SE for a reported attempted kidnapping. A 14-year-old female reported that the suspect stopped his vehicle, approached her, physically assaulted her, and attempted to restrain her while she was walking on the sidewalk. The victim was able to fight off the suspect, causing him to sustain minor injuries before he fled the area in his vehicle.

Investigation and Arrest

Through witness interviews, investigative follow-up, and a review of CCTV footage, detectives determined that the same suspect was responsible for both incidents. Investigators identified the suspect as John Moore, 29.
Moore was arrested within 24 hours and lodged at the Kent County Correctional Facility. He has since been charged with Assault and Battery and Unlawful Imprisonment.

The Kent Safety Network is a collaborative public safety initiative that helps law enforcement agencies across Kent County respond more quickly and effectively to emergencies and investigations. Similar to real time crime centers used throughout the country, the network provides officers with timely, real-time information that can assist in locating suspects, identifying vehicles, and gathering critical investigative leads.

The program brings together all law enforcement agencies in Kent County, including the Kentwood Police Department, creating a coordinated approach to enhancing public safety, sharing resources, and protecting our communities.

Businesses can participate by voluntarily sharing camera feeds through the Fusus by Axon platform, allowing authorized law enforcement personnel access to real-time video during critical incidents. Residents can also participate by registering their security cameras. Camera registration does not provide police with access to video footage; it simply identifies the location of cameras that may be helpful during an investigation, allowing officers to contact the owner if footage is needed.

To participate, go to www.kentsafetynetwork.org

Watch this video to learn more! https://vimeo.com/1193406895/17df593276

Your participation will greatly enhance emergency preparedness by enabling police, fire, and public safety professionals to better assess and rapidly respond to criminal activity and emergency situations. It will also enable investigators to easily gather evidence in case of an incident.
