We loved seeing so many families enjoying the outdoors together at our Family Hike yesterday, and are grateful photographer Eddie Ramirez www.instagram.com/ediscamera was there to capture these sweet moments on the trail!

Making core memories in the great outdoors and helping every individual—young and old—nurture their personal connection to nature is one of the things that makes all of us at Team Sugarloaf and Sonoma Ecology Center excited to come to work every day. Thank you for joining us on the trails, and choosing nature this Memorial Day!

If your little one enjoyed exploring along the creek on this hike, they'll LOVE Creek Camp this summer. Led by Sonoma Ecology Center's Education Team, Creek Camp offers a balance of games, hiking, and storytelling, providing a wonderful opportunity for your child to unwind, recharge, and learn this summer without the distractions of screen time. Creek Camp is for ages 8-12, and runs M-F 9:00 am-3:00 pm throughout July. Sonoma Ecology Center also offered Earth Explorers Camp for ages 6-11, running throughout June. The pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) is the largest woodpecker in California and is unmistakable with its bold appearance and powerful presence. Though not commonly seen, it is often heard as it excavates large rectangular holes in tree trunks and downed wood while searching for insects.

It's time for another installment of Trailside Biology! For our birding enthusiasts, this week we're talking about the American kestrel.

The American kestrel (Falco sparverius) is the smallest falcon in North America and can be found in open habitats like grasslands, meadows, and chaparral. These agile hunters capture prey by diving from a perch or by hovering in place, a unique behavior among falcons.

This post is part of our Trailside Biology series, where volunteers from the Sugarloaf community highlight interesting organisms they encounter while hiking, exploring, and caring for the park. From flowers and fungi to wildlife and seasonal oddities, these observations offer a closer look at the living stories unfolding along our trails.
