Van Buren County SAFE Coalition Committed to making Van Buren County a SAFE Place to Live- http://www.van-buren.k12.ia.us/vnews/display.v/SEC/RESOURCES%7CSAFE%20COALITION

The Van Buren County SAFE Coalition came together originally in 1993, after the floods, as a way to get community members together to work on a specific issue. This group was organized to assist with flood efforts and clean-up after the flood. The group met sporadically over the next few years. It was not until December of 2002 that the group became organized. There were 11 members at the first or

ganized meeting, and the group has now grown to over 45 members. The SAFE Coalition became certified as a SAFE community on February 16th, 2004. Their efforts have been primarily focused on Drugs, Alcohol, Tobacco, and Domestic Violence, and this remains the focus today. The SAFE Coalition was recertified on July 21st, 2007. Their certification is good for 3 years with the Iowa Department of Public Health. On June 11th, 2010 the SAFE Coalition submitted their application for a one-year re-certification based on their Drug Free Communities workplan. This application was accepted and the coalition will be certified again until June 11th 2011.

When teens have opportunities to explore their interests, develop new skills, and contribute to their communities, they’re far less likely to turn to drugs out of boredom or curiosity. Schools, parents, and communities must work together to offer teens diverse, meaningful activities that channel their energy into positive outlets.

Engaging teens isn’t just about keeping them busy; it’s about helping them find a sense of purpose and fulfillment that goes far beyond the fleeting allure of drugs.

Research from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and The National Institute on Drug Abuse - NIDA shows that for every $1 invested in evidence-based prevention, communities can save up to $18 in future costs related to treatment, healthcare, and the criminal justice system.

When we teach coping skills before crisis, support families before disconnection, and reach youth before risky choices take hold, we protect health, strengthen communities, and build lasting resilience.

It’s simple: Prevention is compassionate and it's cost-effective.

Boredom might seem like a minor inconvenience, but for teens, it can be a powerful emotional state with significant consequences:

1. Idle Time and Curiosity: Teens often experiment with drugs simply because they have unstructured time and want to try something new.
2. Seeking Thrills: Adolescence is marked by a natural desire for excitement and new experiences. When teens don’t have access to positive, stimulating activities, they might turn to drugs as a way to fulfill that thrill-seeking impulse.
3. Lack of Purpose: Without a sense of direction, teens can feel aimless, making them more susceptible to peer pressure and risky behaviors, including drug use.

The antidote to boredom is engagement — activities that are challenging, rewarding, and aligned with teens’ interests.

Boredom may seem harmless, but for teenagers, it can be a major trigger for risky behaviors, including drug experimentation. In fact, studies have shown that teens who often experience boredom are 50% more likely to try substances as a way to cope or escape. But there’s a powerful solution: providing teens with purposeful engagement and positive outlets that fill their time, energy, and curiosity.
