🇺🇸 September 11, 2001 — 25 Years Later

Today, the Kerhonkson-Accord First Aid Squad joins our nation in remembering the lives forever changed on September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years have passed, but we have not forgotten.

We remember the 2,977 lives taken far too soon. We honor the firefighters, EMS professionals, law enforcement officers, dispatchers, military personnel, healthcare workers, and countless ordinary citizens who demonstrated extraordinary courage in our nation’s darkest hours.

We remember those who ran toward danger when others were running away. We remember those who worked at Ground Zero in the days, weeks, and months that followed—and those whose lives were later claimed or forever changed by 9/11-related illnesses.

We stand with the survivors.
We stand with the families who still carry their loss.
And we stand with every first responder who continues to answer the call.

For those of us in EMS and public safety, September 11 is more than a date in history. It is a solemn reminder of the oath we share: to serve, to protect, and to be there for our neighbors when they need us most.

May we continue to honor their sacrifice not only with our words, but through our service to one another and to our communities.

Remember the fallen. Honor the heroes. Support the survivors. Never forget.

Rapid Multi-Agency Response Results in Return of Spontaneous Circulation

This morning, Kerhonkson Accord First Aid Squad (KAFAS) was dispatched for an unconscious, unresponsive patient with CPR in progress.

Within 90 seconds of dispatch, Chief Douglas Finney-Carter and Lieutenant Quincy Cutchin responded, along with Ambulance 601, staffed by EMT Marissa L. Smith and MVO-FTO Owen Scott.

Upon arrival, responders found a bystander performing CPR. MVO-FTO Scott immediately took over chest compressions and LT Cutchin applied the LUCAS mechanical chest-compression device. EMT Smith inserted an airway and began bagging the patient. Narcan was administered.

Upon the arrival of paramedics from Ellenville First Aid and Rescue Squad only moments later, the patient did have a return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). The patient had also began breathing independently and demonstrated significantly improved responsiveness.

This successful outcome is a powerful reminder of the importance of immediate bystander CPR, dispatcher-assisted CPR instructions, and strong teamwork among public-safety agencies.

KAFAS extends a sincere thank-you to Ulster County 911 for outstanding lifesaving CPR instructions and coordination, the New York State Police, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, Ellenville Paramedics, and our crew who contributed to the patient’s care.

Incidents such as this demonstrate what can be accomplished when trained dispatchers, bystanders, emergency medical personnel, law enforcement officers, and paramedics work together with one shared purpose: saving a life.

To protect the patient’s privacy, no identifying information or additional medical details will be released.

KAFAS INTRODUCES NEW MOBILE TECHNOLOGY ACROSS AMBULANCE FLEET

Improving Communication • Increasing Efficiency • Strengthening Accountability

The Kerhonkson–Accord First Aid Squad is excited to announce another important investment in the technology our crews use every day to serve our community.

New cellular-enabled iPads are being placed into service aboard KAFAS ambulances, providing our crews with a mobile platform that brings several essential operational tools together in one place.

Through our implementation of CrewForce, in partnership with Ulster County 911, crews will have improved access to dispatch and call information while responding to emergencies. The system will also support vehicle location and tracking during calls, providing enhanced situational awareness and helping strengthen coordination, accountability, and operational efficiency.

The new devices will also allow our EMTs to complete electronic Patient Care Reports (ePCRs) while in the field, reducing the need to return to a desktop computer to complete documentation and allowing reports to be completed more efficiently throughout the course of a call.

Beyond dispatch and patient care documentation, the iPads will give personnel mobile access to important resources including EMS protocols, KAFAS policies and procedures, operational guidelines, reference materials, training resources, and other information crews may need while working in the field.

BETTER TECHNOLOGY — AND LOWER COSTS

One of the most exciting parts of this project is that improving our technology has also allowed us to reduce our monthly operating expenses.

Through a program available through Verizon and the restructuring of our cellular communications services, KAFAS has been able to implement these new devices while realizing more than $500 per month in savings on our cellular communications account.

That represents more than $6,000 in potential annual savings while simultaneously expanding the technology and resources available to our crews.

For KAFAS, this is exactly the kind of investment we want to make: one that improves our capabilities, increases accountability and productivity, provides our personnel with better tools, and responsibly reduces recurring operating costs.

These iPads aren’t simply new equipment. They represent another step toward building a more connected, efficient and responsive emergency medical service.

By putting dispatch information, ePCR capabilities, vehicle tracking, protocols, procedures and other critical resources directly into the hands of our crews, we can spend less time dealing with administrative barriers and more time focused on what matters most — our patients and our community.

We are incredibly excited to put this new system into service and continue finding innovative and fiscally responsible ways to strengthen the services KAFAS provides every day.

These radios are used and in working condition and are being sold as surplus equipment. They may show normal cosmetic wear from service but remain functional.
